10 years of favorite books
We need your help! In honor of our 10th anniversary we'll be featuring a display of our staff's individual selections of the best book each of us has read in the last 10 years. (Not the best books published in the last 10 years, but the best books each of us has READ in the last 10 years!) We've got so many favorites that it's hard for each of us to choose just ONE book, but we are each up to the challenge; are YOU?

Can you narrow the available choices down to just ONE book you would feel comfortable calling "the best book you've read in the past 10 years?" If so, please send an e-mail to kym@wellesleybooksmith.com with your "Best in 10" pick, and a short explanation for why you loved it or why it meant so much to you. We'll continue to feature customers' responses in our newsletter and in the store throughout the year. Help us keep the celebration going!

The Story of Lucy GaultThe Story of Lucy Gault
by William Trevor

Set in 1920s Ireland, this is a haunting story of love, guilt and forgiveness.  The characters are original and memorable.  I loved it because it is beautifully written, understated and poetic.

GilgameshGilgamesh
by Joan London

I loved "Gilgamesh" by Joan London because of its historical motif (pre-WWI, WWI, post-WWI) and the central character-a stalwart woman who takes on challenges in an era where women faced unspeakable societal scorn. London has created a character who faces her challenges without histrionics or a "martyr complex" attitude, but with clarity, grace and dignity.

Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens is also about endurance, grace, and dignity--in this case in the character of a young girl abandoned by her mother (father unknown), who is taken in by a kindly, albeit stern neighbor.
For some fun, check out Calvin Trillin's Tepper Isn't Going Out and Steve Martin's Pure Drivel.

The National Parks: America's Best IdeaNational Parks: America's Best Idea by Ken Burns & Dayton Duncan

Have you been watching the National Parks documentary on PBS? So have we! Lorna has put together a great display of books on our national parks, including this beautiful one, The National Parks by Ken Burns. What better gift to get a jump on the holidays!

  • local & sustainable

We will be welcoming Henrietta's Kitchen's Chef Peter Davis on Thursday the 15th at 7pm. He will be joined by local area experts to discuss how to support and cultivate local, sustainable cuisine in New England. We have all heard the debate about organic vs local, and the importance of supporting local farms and businesses. Thinking about this sent me down to the ubc to find related books - here is what I found:

American Wholefoods Cuisine by Nikki & David Goldbeck
The Green Kitchen Handbook by Annie Berhold-Bond
Hope's Edge: The Next Diet for a Small Planet by Frances Moore Lappe and Anna Lappe
From a Monastary Kitchen: The Classic Natural Foods Cookbook by Brother Victor-Antoine d'Avila-Latourrette
Lauren Groveman's Kitchen by Lauren Groveman
The Gospel of Food: Everything You Think You Know About Food is Wrong by Barry Glassner
Alice Waters and Chez Panisse by Thomas McNamee
Cooking From the Garden by Rosalind Creasy

The used book cellar is open for shopping during regular store hours,
Monday-Saturday 9-9 and Sunday 11-6.

  • leroy

LeroyLeroy is our buddy and ambassador of Tails Doggie Boutique. He brought his owner in with our special 10th anniversary doggie treats and charmed the booksellers and customers both. He really is the most friendly and cuddly dog! And extremely soft and fluffy after having a bath.

Thank you for the special treats! Make sure you bring in YOUR fuzzy friend on Saturday the 17th for a treat from Tails!
