Plans for our Tenth Anniversary Party on Saturday, October 17th are coming together. We wouldn't still be here without you, our loyal and supportive customers. To show our appreciation, we will have a day of celebration with live music, raffles, and cake! Many more details will be coming as plans are finalized.

The National Book Foundation has invited readers to vote for one of six finalists for the all-time Best of the National Book Awards Fiction. The shortlist of titles that have previously won the National and American Book Awards for fiction was selected by 140 writers from across the U.S. The NBF is also offering online voters the chance to have their e-mail address entered for a drawing to win two tickets to the 60th National Book Awards, November 18, and two nights at a hotel. Vote HERE.

Great minds think alike...
Oprah announced the title of her 63rd book club pick on Friday Sept 18th -- a week after Betty Sudarsky announced our 15th book club pick. (Betty picked it first!) They both chose Say You're One of Them by Uwem Akpan. Come talk about it with Betty on October 6th at noon. It is sure to inspire some great discussion.

Congratulation to our Children's Book Buyer, Alison! She was married last weekend - we are all so happy for you! Check out a picture HERE.

10 years of favorite books
We need your help! In honor of our 10th anniversary we'll be featuring a display of our staff's individual selections of the best book each of us has read in the last 10 years. (Not the best books published in the last 10 years, but the best books each of us has READ in the last 10 years!) We've got so many favorites that it's hard for each of us to choose just ONE book, but we are each up to the challenge; are YOU?

Can you narrow the available choices down to just ONE book you would feel comfortable calling "the best book you've read in the past 10 years?" If so, please send an e-mail to kym@wellesleybooksmith.com with your "Best in 10" pick, and a short explanation for why you loved it or why it meant so much to you. We'll feature customers' responses in our newsletter and in the store throughout the year. Help us keep the celebration going!

Here are some of our favorites:

Guns, Germs and SteelGuns, Germs, and Steel
by Jared Diamond

Guns, Germs, and Steel was first published in 1997, but I didn't read it until 2005-2006, shortly after a hardcover edition containing a new chapter on Japan and Korea became available. I underlined the text generously and filled my copy with notes in the margins - everything from expressions of amazement at Diamond's brilliant insights to angry dissents when I thought he was overstating the role of geography in the development of human civilizations. A boundless intellectual feast whether you agree with the author's conclusions or not.

MiddlesexMiddlesex
by Jeffrey Eugenides

A book becomes a favorite of mine when I think of the characters long after I've read the last page. Cal, born a hermaphrodite raised as a boy, but longed to be a girl. Her story of tragedy and triumph told in her amazing family saga with great humor as well as empathy has stayed with me all these years.

The Tale of DespereauxThe Tale of Despereaux by Kate diCamillo

It's rare to read a book as an adult that will bring you back to the magic of childhood. This is one of those rare books. A fantastic tale of love, danger and courage - I just loved this book!

The Book ThiefThe Book Thief
by Marcus Zusak

This book blew me away from the first page, and I loved everything about it - the narrator, the characters, the form of the action, the humor, the pain.  When I came to the end I didn't know what to do with myself - the surest sign that a book has taken hold of you.  One of the best ever.

dog of the week
  • baxter

BaxterMonday was Baxter's very first day in Wellesley Booksmith. He is 16 week-old Olde English Bulldogge. Apparently it is an old breed that they are bringing back. Here is the recipe for the cuteness that is Baxter: 1/2 English Bulldog, 1/6 Mastiff, 1/6 American Bulldog, 1/6 Bull Mastiff and 1/6 Pit Bull.

He is 100% adorable, sweet and funny and his puppy kisses brightened up our Monday. I really wanted to just borrow him for the day. Come back soon, Baxter!
