Today is 09.09.09 - a banner day !!

The air is crisp, the kids are back in school and next week is a huge new releases week -- Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code sequel and Ted Kennedy's memoir, for example. And if hot new books aren't enough, we have a stellar line-up of upcoming events. Check out the list in the box "Upcoming Events" to the right.

One event we are particularly excited about is our Tenth Anniversary Party on Saturday, October 17th! We wouldn't still be here without you, our loyal and supportive customers. To show our appreciation, we will have a day of celebration with live music, raffles, and cake! Many more details will be coming as plans are finalized.

We are putting together a list of our booksellers' favorite -- or most meaningful -- books they have read during the past 10 years. We would love to hear what YOUR favorite book is along with a short description of why you loved it or why it meant so much to you. We will be featuring these recommendations in our newsletter and in the store over the coming year. Please email your pick to  kym@wellesleybooksmith.com. This is going to be fun!

The Confessions of Edward DayThe Confessions of Edward Day
by Valerie Martin

In fewer than 24 hours, I finished Valerie Martin's new novel The Confession of Edward Day.  It was quite a performance. The characters and their actions are drawn so well, they make you believe you are watching theatre.  The story, which takes place in the 1970s, is full of pieces of acting methods and styles with famous acting teachers making their appearances. But mostly the reader lives in the head of Edward (the main character) and under his spell, the story with its complications and intrigues, unfolds.  A really enthralling novel that will end too quickly for all.

Sing Them HomeSing Them Home
by Stephanie Kallos

Stephanie Kallos has written the best kind of fiction - satisfyingly long, with characters you care about and with struggles we all deal with - family ties, loss, love and community. Hope Jones, a physician's wife in Emlyn Springs is swept away in her wheelchair in a tornado. The book picks up 25 years later and tells the story of her three children and the unresolved grief they carry which affects all areas of their lives. The way this town mourns their dead is just stunning, and you become completely caught up with the residents of this ordinary, yet magical Midwest town. I loved her first novel, Broken for You, and this is a fabulous follow-up.

The Evolution of Calpurnia TateThe Evolution of Calpurnia Tate
by Jaqueline Kelly

Are you fascinated by animals or interested in insects? If so, then Calpurnia's story could be for you. This BEAUTIFULLY-written book is a great story about an inquisitive and observant girl who works closely beside her grandfather to unravel the mysteries of nature. I predict a NEWBERY for this one!

Sock Season is on it's way.............
If you knit or crochet, come check out our crafts section. I do a little bit of both and this is the year I'm going to knit my first sock (I've heard the trick is finishing your second sock).
We have the books to get started, for beginners like me, and for the more advanced knitters out there. The following are just a few highlights:

Cute Knits for Baby FeetCute Knits for Baby Feet by Sue Whiting has my three favorite socks right on the cover -- Snake Socks, Duck Feet socks and Cloud Socks -- these projects couldn't get any cuter (and they are small so they will work up fast!)

2-at-a-time Socks by Melissa Morgan-Oakes -- how to use the circular needle method

Knitting the Perfect Pair by Dorothy T. Ratigan -- this author prefers the double pointed needles method

Knitting the Perfect Pair
Sock Innovation by Cookie A -- great new patterns

Knitted Socks East and West by Judy Sumner -- wow! Japanese stitch patterns

  • magnetic poetry

Magnetic PoetryMagnetic poetry has come up with a clever way to send someone a little box of cheer, luck, peace or hope with these mini kits. You can help a friend "Live In Harmony" or send them a "Lucky Star Wish". Either way they are guaranteed to make you smile.

For the little ones is a giant box of REALLY BIG WORDS with over 100 magnetic word tiles. What a great way to play and learn at the same time.

  • nico

NicoNico is a two year-old cutie-pie lab mix with a completely disarming smile. His owner is also very charming and we had a great conversation about lab personalities, comparing their funny quirks. I think Biscuit would have a great time with Nico!
