Greetings!
 | | Dennis Kaiser |
April has already come and gone, and that means PRSA-LA's Annual PRism Awards are just around the corner. This year's event will take place on November 7, and the call for applications will be arriving in your inbox soon. Now would be a great time to save the date and start assembling your entry materials, as well as to reach out if you'd like to get more involved by joining the PRism coordination committee.
Speaking of big events, I'd like to thank Jerry Swerling and the USC Annenberg Strategic Communication and Public Relations Center for putting together a great program for this year's Kenneth Owler Smith Symposium. The Symposium, which took place on April 5, was used to announce the findings of USC Annenberg's Seventh Biennial Communications and Public Relations Generally Accepted Practices (GAP) Study.
The GAP study is the largest and most comprehensive study of corporate communications leaders in public and private corporations, government agencies and non-profits in the United States. Focused on providing actionable guidance for industry decision-makers, the study illuminates how public relations is practiced and budgeted for, and how the corporate communications function is most effectively integrated into organizations. Those with an interest in the GAP study should download the executive summary or the full report. The GAP Insight Base is also recommended reading, should you prefer to dive deep into data.
By now you should also have received an invitation to participate in PRSA-LA's Member Survey. If you have already responded, thank you, but if not please take the survey today or set a reminder for later this week. Completing the survey will assist the board in planning events and programs you'd find valuable for networking, professional development and education. Take a few minutes to anonymously tell us your thoughts, and we'll do our best to bring you the value you expect from your membership.
Respectfully, Dennis Kaiser, PRSA-LA President dennis@prsala.org

In Memoriam:
Thomas "Tom" Wingham
 | | Tom Wingham |
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of chapter member Thomas "Tom" Wingham, 42, a travel & hospitality PR veteran and 25-year employee of the Hilton family of hotels. Wingham served as director of global brand public relations for DoubleTree by Hilton for 13 years, in the process providing inspiration and mentorship to many. After learning of his passing earlier this month, current and former colleagues took to Facebook to praise Wingham for his work ethic. Wingham was known for his habit of seeing possibilities where none existed, bringing driving enthusiasm and passion to his work and embracing those he worked with as family. While overseeing strategic and day-to-day media relations operations for more than 280 Doubletree hotels and resorts in 25 countries, Wingham helped advance the DoubleTree CARE culture and launched the award-winning program, Teaching Kids to CARE. Wingham was a fifth-generation native Californian and graduate of Woodbury University in Los Angeles. In addition to PRSA-LA, he held memberships in the Travel Bloggers Exchange and the National Association of Travel Journalists. He is survived by his parents, George and Penny Wingham and niece, Veronica, for whom he served as guardian.

Bill Faith Scholarship Supports International Communications Program
Public relations professionals are encouraged to make a tax-deductible gift to fund a new scholarship program that allows undergraduate students study a range of approaches to public communication media across Europe. The International Communications Studies (ICS) program, which lives at the University of Southern California (USC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, will mark its 41st anniversary this year. Because of the growing international demands of the communications profession, the ICS program is considered a "must" for any aspiring public relations professional. The Dr. Bill Faith Endowed Scholarship fund has recently been created to help needy and worthy students attend the five-week program in Europe. The larger the endowment, the more scholarships USC can provide in honor of the program's pioneer. The first Bill Faith Scholars will leave for Europe in June 2012. Online donations can be made at https://giveto.usc.edu/index.asp by selecting "Bill Faith/ICS Endowed Fund" from the Annenberg School menu. For more information, call the office of development at (213) 821-1660.

The Los Angeles office of RKF, the leading urban retail real estate services firm in the country with more than $20 billion in annual sales, has retained The Pollack PR Marketing Group (PPMG). PPMG will help the firm achieve a greater presence in local and national trade media. RKF selected PPMG because of the firm's experience with helping professional service organizations.
