Greetings!
Eric Moses
Eric Moses, PRSA-LA President

Summer is over, which means it's time for PRSA's Leadership Assembly, which will be held Oct. 16 in Washington., D.C. This is an annual meeting of PRSA members from across the country who adopt the policies that govern the Society. As I mentioned a couple of months ago, the most significant debate this year focuses the eligibility requirements for national leadership.

Currently, there is only one path to leadership. Only members who hold an Accredited Public Relations (APR) certification are eligible to serve on the national board. Of the 21,000 or so active PRSA members, only 4,000 members hold APRs. The LA Chapter board voted to support a bylaw amendment that will create three paths to leadership in our society. Certainly, there must still be high standards for those seeking a national board position. The proposed bylaw upholds those high standards.

There is no one defined path to our profession and that is what sets PR apart from other careers, like lawyers and doctors. Our advice is shaped by our education, our experiences and our understanding the dynamic media through which we communicate. As the communications vehicles evolve, so must the professional. Now it's time for PRSA to evolve and open its doors to all members who want to lead. Our board urges the national assembly to adopt the bylaw amendment.

One other note, the PRism Awards Show is November 10 at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel.  We'll be contacting finalists soon.  Good luck to all entrants.

  Charlie Beck
Charlie Beck, LAPD Chief of Police
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck has been using his best communications skills following a much-reported officer-involved shooting in the Westlake area. Hear how Chief Beck is handling the media and community outreach effort in the weeks after the incident.  You'll find out as PRSA-LA goes one-on-one with LA's top cop to talk about policing and public relations at an LA LIVE special event.

Over the years, Los Angeles' police chiefs have understood how to use public relations to shape the image of the department.  Whether it was radio's "Calling All Cars," TV's "Dragnet" or the Internet's LAPDblog, the police department has evolved the way it communicates with the people it protects and serves and how it sends warnings to criminals.

LAPD Chief Beck will be interviewed by guest moderator Deane Leavenworth, Regional Vice President, Time Warner Cable.

Networking and hors d'oeuvres will be followed by the conversation with Chief Beck at 7 p.m.

For more information and to register, please visit the event page on PRSA-LA's Web site.

Quality Time also offers a unique networking opportunity.  You'll make new contacts, share your expertise and gain new knowledge as you team up with other PR professionals and nonprofits for stimulating and productive 75-minute brainstorming sessions.  Participants have the option of volunteering for the entire day or signing up for just the morning or afternoon sessions.
