Greetings!
Eric Moses | Summer is over, which means it's time for PRSA's Leadership Assembly, which will be held Oct. 16 in Washington., D.C. This is an annual meeting of PRSA members from across the country who adopt the
policies that govern the Society. As I mentioned a couple of months ago, the most significant debate this year focuses the eligibility requirements for national leadership.
Currently, there is only one path to leadership. Only members who hold an
Accredited Public Relations (APR) certification are eligible to serve on the
national board. Of the 21,000 or so active PRSA members, only 4,000 members
hold APRs. The LA Chapter board voted to support a bylaw amendment that will
create three paths to leadership in our society. Certainly, there must still
be high standards for those seeking a national board position. The proposed
bylaw upholds those high standards.
There is no one defined path to our profession and that is what sets PR
apart from other careers, like lawyers and doctors. Our advice is shaped by
our education, our experiences and our understanding the dynamic media
through which we communicate. As the communications vehicles evolve, so must
the professional. Now it's time for PRSA to evolve and open its doors to all
members who want to lead. Our board urges the national assembly to adopt the
bylaw amendment.
One other note, the PRism Awards Show is November 10 at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel. We'll be contacting finalists soon. Good luck to all entrants.
