Greetings!
Eric Moses | At our monthly meeting on June 29th, the PRSA-LA board of directors voted to support a campaign to eliminate the requirement that national PRSA officers and board members hold an Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) certificate. Our chapter is the first in the nation to support the petition. The board took this leadership position because it believes PRSA ought to distinguish its members by their professional talents and passion for advancing the profession -- whether or not they are accredited -- and find national leaders among them. The Ad Hoc Committee to Promote Democracy in PRSA, a group of six senior practitioners including Edelman President and CEO Richard Edelman and three APR-certified practitioners, is circulating a petition to generate support to change the current PRSA bylaws. In its petition, the committee notes "less than 20% of PRSA members are accredited, meaning that 80% of the 21,000 members cannot become PRSA leaders unless they choose to become APR." Our support for eliminating the APR requirement does not affect PRSA-LA's support for the APR program, which we believe provides professional development and distinction for those who hold certification. We urge you to read and sign the petition to help lead change in how PRSA is governed.
Eric Moses, PRSA-LA President Director, Communications & Public Affairs Occidental Petroleum Corp. ericmosesprsa@yahoo.com

Pollack Picked by Make-a-Wish Foundation
Noemi Pollack
 | For the sixth straight year, the Pollack PR Marketing Group (PPMG) has been retained by Make-a-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles to handle PR for the annual Season of Wishes™ campaign. Founded in 1980, the Foundation grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Over the past three decades it has grown to become the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 67 chapters in the US and its territories. PPMG helped create the L.A. chapter's annual Season of Wishes holiday campaign, which aims to raise regional awareness of the Make-A-Wish brand and help grant wishes to every eligible child. In other PPMG news, the agency also announced that it has been tapped by the National Notary Association (NNA) to help publicize a soon-to-be-published book of essays by Calvin Coolidge, the only US President to have his oath of office administered by a notary public (who also happened to be his father) instead of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

In Memoriam
Betsy Plank, APR, Fellow PRSA
Betsy Plank, APR & Fellow, PRSA | Betsy Plank, APR, Fellow PRSA, honored leader, mentor and matriarch of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the public relations profession, passed away on May 23rd following a short illness. She was 86.
Often referred to as the "First Lady of Public Relations," Plank received international recognition during her distinguished career in corporate and agency public relations.
She was the first woman to head a division of Illinois Bell (now Ameritech), the first woman to be elected president of the Publicity Club of Chicago (1963), the first woman to be elected president of PRSA (1973) and a founding member of PRSA's College of Fellows. Among her many awards and accolades, she was the first and only person ever to receive three of PRSA's top individual honors: the Gold Anvil (1977), the Paul M. Lund Public Service Award (1989) and the Patrick Jackson Award for Distinguished Service (2001).
Betsy was also a pioneer in public relations education who believed strongly that PR professionals have a responsibility to help students grow and become leaders. She helped create the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), and served as co-chair of the 1987 national commission to develop guidelines for undergraduate public relations curriculum. In 2005, she established the Betsy Plank Scholarship Endowment Fund - PRSA's first such scholarship endowment.
Betsy was a mentor, role model and inspiration to PR professionals across the nation, including many here in Los Angeles. She will be missed.
