Greetings!
Eric Moses | If you ever wanted to know what goes on within the walls of the White House press office, you won't want to miss our July 13th event at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
PRSA-LA is proud to bring you an exclusive panel discussion with four senior public relations professionals who have had a hand in influencing public policies of the most powerful men and women in the world. The panel of current and former communications directors and press secretaries from the Obama, both Bush and Reagan administrations - Camille Johnston, Noelia Rodriguez, David Demarest and Sheila Tate - will talk about their "Presidential Perspectives" in a forum moderated by Dan Schnur, director of USC's Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics. For more details, see the below newsletter post.
We are also happy to announce that our event with Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck, originally set to take place this month, has been rescheduled for September. You will receive details on that event as it approaches. Also, be on the lookout for the PRism Call for Entry in your mailbox.

The Wolcott Legacy
Fifty years after it was founded, Counselors Academy pays tribute to former PRSA-LA President Bob Wolcott, Jr.
by Denis Wolcott, APR
Robert B. Wolcott, Jr. | As they
gathered recently in North Carolina for the
annual Counselors
Academy conference, a few
hundred PRSA colleagues sought the same thing my father did 50 years ago: A
once-a-year opportunity to exchange ideas among peers and to "stretch
one's brain" away from the daily grind of running an agency or division. To Robert
B. Wolcott Jr., the value of his peers was very clear. Fifty years ago, Bob created
the Public Relations Society of America's "Counselors Academy"
so executive members of PRSA would have their own peer group. Back then, PRSA needed
this "club" to compete with similar peer groups such as the PR
Seminar, the Arthur Page Society, the National Investor Relations Institute and
others. Counselors
was the first "special section" to be created within PRSA. Today, the
national organization has 16 sections covering various specialties and peer
groups, from Sports and Entertainment to Technology to Public Affairs. The
public relations profession has grown substantially over the past 50 years, so
it is only natural that we seek a way to remain within the "right
sized" peer group that caters to our specialty(ies). Forming
the Counselors Academy probably helped my father's path
to becoming PRSA's president in 1966. He also was president of the PRSA's
Greater Los Angeles chapter. Bob
Wolcott passed away in June 2007. Denis
Wolcott is a former president of PRSA-LA. He reflects further on the 50th anniversary of Counselors Academy
at http://losangelespr.blogspot.com.

Swerling Announces Results of GAP VI Study
Jerry Swerling | Jerry Swerling, director of PR studies and the Strategic PR Center at USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, recently released the first two parts of a five-part series of reports on the Center's sixth Generally Accepted Practices (GAP) study. The first GAP VI report is titled "Budgets & Staffing," and shows that while 2009 was hardly a banner year for the PR/Communication profession, it does not appear to have been nearly as bad as some have suggested. The second report, "Organization and Reporting," covers PR organization, reporting lines, values and management perceptions. Both reports are available for free download at www.annenberg.usc.edu/scpre. The remaining reports for the GAP IV Study covering Digital/Social Media, Use of Outside Agencies and Best Practices will be released over the next few weeks on a staggered basis. The GAP study provides PR/communication and marketing professionals with the information they need to make informed decisions, while monitoring the health and perceptions of the industry.
Tellem Heats Up Vegas
Dan Grody | Susan Tellem and Dan Grody, partners at Tellem Worldwide, are heading to Las Vegas June 7-10 for the National Fire Protection Association Conference & Expo, where they will lead a panel discussion on "Working with Media in Crisis Situations." They will be joined by reporters from TV and print who will talk about both traditional and social media during crises.

MEMBER MILESTONES
Myers Sprints into Action for "Amigo Day"
Julian Myers, APR | Julian
Myers, APR is at it again...
The 92
year-old principal of Julian Myers Public Relations is gearing up to compete at
the California Senior Games, which will be held June 5th at CalTech.
He'll be going
for the gold in nine separate track and field events in the name of "Amigo
Day" -- a project he co-founded with his wife
Patsy in 2004 to encourage people to devote the first Sunday of every month to
forming new friendships.
As we
reported previously, Julian has competed in more than 25 marathons across the
globe. He is also the U.S.
champ for his age group in the 3,000 meter race. He rejoined PRSA-LA in 2009 after a 35 year
hiatus, and has no intention of retiring anytime soon from track and field or
his namesake PR agency.
"I
intend to keep busy in my profession until I'm 120," Julian declared.
"After that I'll concentrate on my running and visiting Amigo Day
celebrations all over the world."
Godspeed!
Musella Hits the Pavement
John Musella | John
Musella, PRSA-LA board member and director of government and environmental
Affairs for Newhall Land, ran the 99th Annual
Bay to Breakers 12k (7.46 mile)
footrace in San Francisco on May 16.
This was John's first
"mini" marathon. He finished with a very respectable time of 01.09.10, which placed him 3,135th
out of 24,304 runners. Next up: The Disneyland Half Marathon in September.
Perhaps
with some practice John will start running full marathons with 92 year-old
Julian Myers. :)
