For a few years I've been part of a program in our business community called Connecting to Success. We bring in a couple thousand high school students to meet in sessions facilitated by volunteers in the business community. We all can learn much by working with the next generation of business leaders.
The curriculum includes "Building Your Image for Success" and addresses the process of a student building their own personal brand. This addresses how they present themselves in person as well as online through the use of social media.
"Money Smart" provides students with a basic working knowledge of bank accounts, credit, debt, and savings.
The topic I facilitate is "Ethics - Doing the Right Thing." It's always been interesting to see how the students react to this topic and what they see as being right or wrong.
Each of these topics is important and even as a "seasoned" business person, I always take away something positive from participating in this program. The concepts presented to these students are principles we all should understand.
In this issue, I share a personal story that got me thinking about my own values and the importance of doing what you say you are going to do. I reveal a bit of my own life in the story below. In my opinion, being honest enables you to Connect to Success.

Business dealings fascinate me. Having a value system that is based on honesty and doing what you say, to me just isn't that hard. And I don't think it is just because I am more seasoned in my age that I believe that.
Lately, a few situations have come up in business that got me thinking about these things and the values I hold with high regard.
Let me be clear. I'm far from perfect. I've made many mistakes in my life and even with my best efforts; I know will keep making them. But I do have a heart to do the right thing and be a man of integrity. I didn't grow up this way, but I developed core values through my faith and life experiences.
In today's marketplace we need to choose our supplier partners carefully. While one mug supplier could care less about delivering a quality product and taking care of our client, another bent over backwards to help.
