Is This the Industry's Worse Nightmare?

Angry Man

There has been much talk about product safety in recent years. PPAI Law has worked diligently to lobby on our behalf, but have we come to the point where bad things start happening?

In this issue we share a story that should scare those who sell promotional products. What happened here clearly illustrates how government imposed requirements can have a negative effect on our business. See below for this story and see how one supplier is complying with the Consumer Product Safety Information Act (CPSIA) labeling standards.

I have contacted this supplier for their comments regarding their decision to place identifying numbers alongside a clients logo, but have not received a response. Each supplier handles these CPSIA standards differently, creating a variety of challenges. Is this the industry's worse nightmare? You decide.

PPAI has been very diligent lobbying on our behalf. Legislative challenges are complex and have a profound effect on our industry. Product safety is certainly not a new topic, the time has come however, where we can't close our eyes and ears anymore. We welcome your comments at the bottom of the article below.

In my Friday From the Desk of Jeff Solomon video, we touch on this weeks industry news from Promo Marketing with some tech and entertainment news. Don't miss this weeks commentary!

Think This Can't Happen to You?
The Reality of CPSIA!
(Don't Tune This Out!)

CPSIA Logo

Most in our industry have heard about the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). And it seems that up until now, distributors have been relatively insulated from the evolving standards that suppliers should adapt to in order to be compliant with CPSIA.

That is changing.

Recently, a distributor placed an order for imprinted key tags. The order arrived, but along with the client's logo and website there were a series of numbers printed under where the imprint was located. They didn't know what these numbers were. Upon checking with the supplier, it was discovered that this is part of their CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) labeling effort. These numbers identify key elements in the production process. These identifying numbers are to be printed on products that are considered for use by children.

A identifying number will be imprinted on about 475 of this supplier's products. And at the moment it seems, you may not know where the numbers are being printed, as it depends on which product is purchased. This supplier is working on a system to pass this information on to distributors via their website or in future catalogs.  Are you kidding?
