Times are Changing...
Are You Changing With Them?

IT'S A NEW WORLD OUT THERE!

It's a Changing WorldThe economy and changing times are a hot topic these days. At a business meeting I attended, the President of the California Manufacturing Association shared about the state of manufacturing.  Things aren't what they once were.  Manufacturing is not a pretty picture in California.

It would seem that the growth in business these days will come through innovation.  The fastest growing companies today didn't even exist 10 to 15 years ago.

My good friend Rod Brown, from MadeToOrder made this comment, that very succinctly, sums it up:  A powerful information resource, younger than our 14-year old sons, is experiencing double-digit growth and the venerable business icon General Motors went bankrupt!  That company would be Google.

Things are different today and to succeed it will helpful to embrace the new tools that are available to us.  Of course social media is all the rage these days and many are talking about its benefits.  Conversely, many don't fully understand all this new stuff.   For some, change doesn't come easy.

In this issue we feature an informative article with 10 Tips for Digital Slowpokes.  Some good basic information is offered with links to many good resources.  Enjoy.

It's time again for Sweda's Case Study Contest.  Here you have the opportunity to put $5000.00 in your pocket and a qualified company will receive a $2500.00 credit memo.  It's a  prize package worth pursuing! Are You a Digital Slowpoke?

10 Ways You Can Catch Up
By Ann Handley

Turtle_Slowpoke

Thirteen years ago, I co-founded a company called ClickZ. It was one of the first sources of how to market your business online. In its infancy, ClickZ was a simple website featuring a single daily how-to article.

At the time, it was a hot source of cutting-edge information on things like how to create an effective banner ad, ways to count ad clicks, how to brand online, and (within a year or so) the emerging business of email marketing.

Often, I hear laments from folks who barely have a website running, who haven't a clue how to start a blog (or a Facebook page, or a Twitter feed, and so on), and who are grappling with the essential question of whether they should do any of it. They feel so far behind the curve that they can't discern any kind of arc up ahead.

Their mood is best described as Overwhelmed, with a subtext of, "Isn't it impossible to catch up now?"  What advice would you tell someone who is a "digital slowpoke?"  How would you advise them to begin creating a digital and social media presence?

Here are my ten suggestions;

1. Create a solid Web presence. Of course, you need a website. Create one using one of several free website development tools. Some good easy-to-use options for non-geeks include Weebly, Wix, Webs, Yola.com, or Flavors.me. For a stupid-easy solution, use blog software from WordPress.org as your main Web page.

2. Open the door to interaction. Make sure you spell out on your website what your small business does, who it serves, and where it's located. That sounds obvious, right?  But it's surprisingly easy to overlook the basics when you're the one building it.

3. Start a database.
4. Start publishing.

5. Open the door to interaction a little farther.
