Everyone is talking about social networking and PromoTips has addressed this topic with articles addressing Five Big Mistakes and Turn and Face(book) the Friends I Never Knew I Had. Much is being said about these new communication tools, but here is a point most of us don't think about: How do your clients like to communicate?

The father/son team at Champion Education Resources recently opened my eyes and I'm finally understanding a bit more about "social networking."   If you don't get "it" you better start expanding your horizons and realize that in this new marketplace multiple ways of communication will be required to connect with buyers.

While much is being said about "social networking," I've not seen much said about the generational differences in communication methods.
In this issue we feature an interesting article on this topic penned by Jason Jacobus, whose blog "Thoughts of a Young Gun" is filled with great information from the next generation of business leaders. The "Rated R for Results" blog from Jason's father Jim, offers a more traditional perspective on business building.

I've discovered that many young people don't even use e-mail like us "old" folks...and we thought we were tech savvy. Younger buyers may prefer to be reached through texting, as opposed to the phone or e-mail.  In this issue, we address how your client's want to be reached and ask the question; would you communicate with your clients with text messages?  We welcome your comments on this topic.  Is texting clients appropriate?

YOUNG and OLD PEOPLE UNITE!
Tying nicely into this issue is the launch of a new Facebook group promo35.  Here, the young, bright minds of our industry will connect, but they are graciously allowing some of the old folks to participate. Click here to join! This group is expanding quickly because these people get "it."  Jump on board!

Happy business building,

Where Do These Fit in my Business?
By Jason Jacobus

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of speaking with a group about integrating "new technology" with what they are currently doing. As I walked into the room it was easy to see why I was there. Half of the group had been in business for 20+ years and the other half had only been out of college for a few years. As I introduced myself to the group, I asked them "At the end of the day, what would you like to get out of our time together?" The answer was predictable...

"Jason...over the past few months we have discussed a number of ways to reach out to our client base and we keep hearing words such as "social networking" and "text messaging".  Now, I grew up following the basic framework for networking and it has worked very well for me throughout the years. At the same time, our younger team members are saying that we should be on Twitter and LinkedIn. Which way do you think is the most effective way to connect with clients?"

My answer to them was we must utilize BOTH!
