Our office sees increasingly more young
patients reporting heel pain when playing sports such as football, basketball and
soccer. Fortunately, kids generally heal
very quickly and treatment may be simple if taken care of at the first sign of a problem.
Kids undergoing growth spurts can also suffer from heel pain when new bone begins to form at the growth plate of the heel to accommodate growing feet. These growth spurts normally occur between ages 8 and 13 for girls and between 8 and 15 for boys. This type of heel pain is normal and will resolve in time.
With a teenage child, the growth plate has completely closed, therefore, heel pain may be related to other conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, bone bruises or even a fracture.
The only way to know for sure the cause of your child's heel pain is to see a physician who can diagnose and treat the problem. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's foot pain, we encourage you to call our office to schedule an appointment. |
