Why Be an Ambassador?

After becoming an Alhambra Chamber of Commerce member and then an Ambassador, I now have a better understanding of what new things are happening in the city. It is a great way to network and help people connect.
Being an Ambassador means helping out at the fun mixers and Business to Business events. I have met a lot of great people I would not have met any other way. It is also nice to feel like you are giving back to the community.

Alhambra Beauty Supply, 445 W. Main St., has helped make Alhambrans more beautiful for 40 years. From left: Sherry Owens, Tinker Freeman, Cookie Owens, and Bob Latta.
|
Alhambra Beauty Supply has beautified Alhambra for 40 years Alhambra Beauty Supply is a mom and pop beauty products and hair salon that has operated in Alhambra since 1972. Though they've seen their ups and downs, owner Marsha Owens, who everyone endearingly calls Cookie, said the secret to her store's longevity is simple. "It's a candy store for girls. Girls come in here, and sometimes they just relax. You can get your hair done, you can get your brows waxed, a massage, a facial," said Cookie. "We have a deep relationship with a lot of our customers." Forty years ago, Cookie bought a 1,000 sq. ft. beauty store for $5,000 at 717 E. Main St. She was 27 years old, and her first husband, Lyman Latta, had just passed away. She made the tough decision to move with her kids from Torrance to Alhambra, essentially starting a new life. "I think it gives women hope," she said. "Women weren't allowed to do anything at that time. When I started, I couldn't buy a car, rent a house, or anything like that. A customer rented a house to me, and I had to put my savings account up to buy a car. It was really the people and word of mouth that got this business going." Today, the 4,000 sq. ft. shop at 445 W. Main St. provides a number of beauty services, including hair cuts, styling, facials, makeup, waxing, and Reiki massage. Alhambra Beauty Supply sells many different beauty products, specialty cosmetics, hair products, and designer jewelry made in America. A popular event at the store is the Jane Iredale makeup day that is offered four times a year. "We go to classes, and we learn about our products. We don't just say, Here, take it, it's good," said Cookie. Cookie is proud to have built her store with a family environment. She points to the young woman working the register, Ashley, whom she has known since she was five years old. Cookie's sister, Tinker, also works at the store, while Cookie's daughter, Sherry, works there as a hair stylist. Cookie's son, Bob Latta, has managed the business for 22 years. "I love my family, and it feels good what I do, because I feel like I'm building something for the future," said Bob. "This community has really embraced us. We have a lot of friends here." Comfort and beauty are available at Alhambra Beauty Supply. Phone 626-281-2790 for more information.
