Executive Director's Message
Dear Chamber Member,
Two measures have qualified for California's statewide ballot in June. Proposition 28 - "Limits on Legislators' Terms in Office" reduces the total time a person may serve in the state legislature from 14 years to 12 years. It allows a person to serve a total of 12 years in the Assembly or the Senate, or a combination of both. The California State Chamber of Commerce is supporting this initiative that improves on the term limit initiative passed in 1990.
Proposition 29 - Opposes. The measure imposes an additional $1 per pack tax on cigarettes and an equivalent tax increase on other tobacco products to fund research for cancer and tobacco related illnesses. Although research is important and the measure could raise nearly $1 billion in new taxes, the State Chamber of Commerce opposes Proposition 29 because nothing in the measure requires the funding to be spent in California or even in the United States. Since the Legislative Analyst Office also concluded that the revenue stream to fund these new programs would be declining and a new program could put existing programs at risk in the future years and cause budget imbalances.

The School of Fashion and Design, 212 E. Main St.,
Alhambra, teaches its students to be part of society.
School of Fashion and Design
helps students function, grow, belong
The School of Fashion and Design's display of the school's hand-made items in its windows only shows a sample of what goes on inside. Founded in Los Angeles in 1984 by Angie Levy, who died last year, the school was soon moved to Alhambra so the students could be in a community setting.
"Angie had two passions that led her to open the school: fashion design and working with the developmentally disabled," said new owner, Lydia Aldrett, who worked with Mrs. Levy at the school for 24 years. "It's an honor to carry on her work."
Among the many skills taught, sewing is a major focus. Student handy-work is sold in the school's boutique. Students also learn reading, computer skills, math, and everyday life skills.
"We teach students that they are part of society," said Ms. Aldrett. "Angie's love was handicapped kids. Each and every one of them is very important," she said.
Students are encouraged to become active and caring members of their community. They have contributed hand-made items to victims of the 9-11 and tsunami disasters and to many other causes. Many awards adorn the school's walls in tribute to students.
The School of Fashion and Design operates under the guidance of the East Los Angeles Regional Center and the State of California. The school is located at 212 E. Main St., Alhambra 91801.
For more information, phone Ms. Aldrett at 626-289-1632.
