Pursuing a large federal grant?  Let us know!  We need to hear about the grants that you are pursuing.  In particular, if you've submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Education's Promise Neighborhoods or i3 program, or if you plan to submit to RTT-ELC, we want to know about it, and we're here to help!

Federal Trends and Opportunities

With federal funding for educational programs growing increasingly scarce, it can seem daunting to identify potential funding streams to tap into. The Grant Center is working to help stations find new ways to access federal dollars -- possibly in programs you haven't considered before. One such area is around expanded learning opportunities, the "umbrella" concept that includes after-school, summer learning, extended day and year and other initiatives that provide children with more time for learning. Read more about the importance of expanded learning opportunities, and don't forget to join us for our September 29th webinar on this same topic.

The recently-announced Race To The Top -- Early Learning Challenge program may be one of the last few federal education grants to be competed out in fiscal year 2011, which ends on October 1, 2011. Agencies have, for the most part, issued the grants they are responsible for. New grant competitions can be expected when the FY 2012 appropriations bills are finalized. We expect the FY 2012 appropriations process to take awhile. It is likely that there will be a continuing resolution starting on October 1, 2011, until an appropriations deal is finalized.

Federal Funding

Gulf of Mexico Regional Partnerships: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will fund projects that improve the health of the Gulf of Mexico, including environmental education projects. Anticipated funding: approximately $3m. EPA anticipates awarding approximately 10 to 50 cooperative agreements. Deadline: September 30, 2011.

Race To The Top -- Early Learning Challenge (RTT-ELC) Program: This new program from the U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services awards grants to state educational agencies to improve early learning programs. Stations can partner with their state educational agencies in a variety of ways. Read more about this program and the role that stations can play. Anticipated funding: $500m is available for this program, and the estimated range of awards is $50m to $100m. Deadline: October 19, 2011.

Museums for America: This program from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) provides funding for museums to serve the public more effectively. Stations can partner with local museums to create digital content, develop curricula, integrate technology, expand public education programs, develop teacher training programs and create websites. Anticipated funding: grants will range from $5,000 to $150,000. Deadline: November 1, 2011.

Bay-Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) Program: This National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) program funds environmental education experiences that promote locally relevant, experiential learning in the K-12 environment. The B-WET regions accepting proposals for FY2012 funding are California, Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico and Hawaii. Anticipated funding: Funding amounts and project periods vary among the four regions. Deadline: The deadlines vary regionally, as well.

Foundation Funding

GRAMMY Foundation: This foundation makes grants for archiving and preservation of the music and recorded sound heritage of the Americas. Letter of inquiry deadline: October 3, 2011.

Verizon Foundation: This foundation focuses principally on funding education and literacy, as well as safety (including domestic violence prevention, health education, Internet safety and improving the lives of people with disabilities). Deadline for 2011 is October 16, 2011.

Independent Television Service (ITVS):This funder is offering small outreach grants to television stations for the Women & Girls Lead initiative and plans to offer additional grants to stations in Fall 2011 for Community Cinema projects associated with the initiative. Additional funding opportunities are available to independent film producers and television stations.

Reva and David Logan Foundation: This foundation has a strong history of support for investigative journalism. It looks for projects that converge with the family's values and that will be catalyzed by foundation support.

Microsoft Corporation Contributions Program: Public media outlets are eligible for software donations from Microsoft, which has recently increased the number of products that a nonprofit can request. Public media may also find a fit in Microsoft's Unlimited Potential giving program, which includes promoting the innovative use of technology in education, teacher training, workforce development (including community-based technology skills training) and innovation.
