President's Note

Greetings!

How can we begin anywhere but with our recent purchase of Hellnotes.

JS was very excited to announce the purchase of the domain name and website of hellnotes.com in the month of July, but we are even more excited that David Silva, the founder, agreed to join the JS team.  He will continue to run and manage the website which will maintain the same format and mission statement.

Hellnotes is devoted to updating the world on any and all horror events/news while supporting the artists that help create the horrific things we enjoy so much.  We at JS are honored to now be a part of the rich tradition David has created and will do our best to keep it going for years to come.

You might notice the change in our newsletter name as well as our adjusted banner image. We will be moving to a unified theme on all of our websites and newsletter so all of our content will be presented as one brand. It just seemed fitting that our newsletter be renamed to Hellnotes.

Our newsletter is evolving as well under the helmsmanship of Russ Thompson and our subscriber list has grown by 150% over the last year, with most of that growth happening in the last three months.  While our book sales did not fare as well in April and May, July was our best unit and revenue month ever, even topping the fantastic sales we enjoyed during the December 2011 holiday season.

July sales were led by Brett J. Talley.  His That Which Should Not Be continues to remain strong and his July release of The Void had a great start with only a couple of weeks of availability.  I can't wait to see how the two books perform in August.  Congratulations to Brett and we wish him continued success.

In July we released for pre-sale limited 1st edition autographed hard cover copies of Twice Shy and The Devil of Echo Lake.  The two books tied for 1st place in our 2012 writing contest and are exclusively distributed by JS and Cemetery Dance.  There are only 100 numbered copies of each.  If you want a piece of history you should grab a copy of our first ever limited edition offering.  There will be many more through the years but these two books are rare gems and well worth the reasonable price of $49.95.

August will see JS releasing two books, Priestess of the Eggstone and Contrition.  Both are excellent offerings.  If you haven't read them yet you should grab a copy of both quickly.  We are taking a break in September but stay tuned for October.  We have three books coming out that will define JS as an established genre publisher for many years to come.  At least that is how I would describe them.  :)

Thanks everyone.  We appreciate you supporting us.  Now get your friends and family to sign up to the newsletter!  Any new subscriber in the month of August still gets a JS paperback book for free.  Do it quickly though, supplies are running low.

Christopher C. Payne

President

Living the life you write. Writers can't always. For many, writing is the escape from the mundane, the wielding of powers they can only display in pages, because wearing a cape in public still has not caught on as a fashion trend. Few of us feel our daily lives really are the stuff of novels. The writers who are virtual twins to their literary selves-they are the envy of readers, and others authors alike.

It sometimes seems that Author Jaleta Clegg is lucky to be writing her own life, and space/time forces her to leave out most of the good stuff.

Writing Tips

In reading manuscripts over the past few months, the single most frequent area of difficulty I have noted deals with those pesky little points, the ellipsis.

While they may seem minor in big picture of a novel, or even within a short story, they are important for what they say and how they say it. So it might be interesting to take a few moments and review what ellipses are...and what they aren't.

In some ways, contemporary storytellers' concerns with point-of-view are the great-great-great grandchildren (and a couple dozen more greats if you wish) of ancient writers' concerns for Unity.

In the Poetics, Aristotle defined three Unities as essential for Tragedy:

Unity of Action, that is, that there be a single plot, with as few subplots as possible-ideally none;

Unity of Place, which meant that all of the action had to take place in the same area-no geographical wandering, and no multiple locales on a single stage;

and Unity of Time, which required that all of the actions take place within one day.

After receiving 868 comments regarding its proposed settlement with Simon & Schuster, Hachette and HarperCollins in its e-book price fixing lawsuit, the Department of Justice has determined that the proposed "final judgment" provides "an appropriate and effective remedy" for the antitrust violations alleged in its complaint "and therefore is in the public interest." It dismissed critical comments to the settlement as largely being submitted "by those who have an interest in seeing consumers pay more for e-books, and hobbling retailers that might want to sell e-books at lower prices."

Horror is old as firelight. From the earliest, frightening dusks of civilization, a storyteller has been just at the edge of that light, making monsters real to everyone who would listen. With the night sky in full view, and dangerous twinkles in the gloom around, humans have huddled more closely together in the fear of darkness than for any other reason.

As much as we fear that darkness-we love being scared by storytellers. We have revered them for as long as we have revered religion. Being scared makes living feel more 'alive', and everyone has a favorite spooky tale.

Enter Brett J. Talley-a storyteller in the oldest sense; a teller of legends, a maker of monsters. We are very pleased to bring this superb author forward with a special interview.
