Another month! Is it just me or is this summer flying by just a little too fast? Don't tell anyone but I am getting married August 13th. Yes, you heard that right. Give me a round of applause and if you feel the need, venture over to Macy's where I am registered and send me some China. Hahahaha, ok, just kidding, about the present part, but I really am getting married.
July has seen JournalStone continue to expand our ever growing presence. JournalJabber is now going strong and the ladies are finding a wonderful rhythm in their ever increasing quest for the elusive toilet snake! Trust me when I say you have to listen to the show to understand and, even then, the odds are against you.
With the end of our esteemed $2,000 in 2011 contest reaching its fruition, we decided to launch the 2011 Short Story contest. The top three winners will be paid 5 cents a word for their submissions. Only the top three get a monetary prize, but the top fifteen will be published. Send your submissions to joel@journalstone.com. He is running the show on this one. We just can't go a month without giving out some kind of prize.
August is a big month for Anne C. Petty. Her book, Shaman's Blood, is set to be published August 5th. If you haven't checked it out you absolutely must. I don't think that is a toilet snake on the cover though. That reptile is huge!
We also want to welcome Angela Alsaleem into the JS fold. She signed a contract with us in July and we hope to get her book, Women Scorned, published this year. If you love a crazy ride you had better get yourself prepped for this one. It is quite interesting.
If you are interested in purchasing some of these books before they are published, head over to Journal-Store.com. We often list the electronic copies for sale 4 to 8 weeks prior to their publication date.
The JS $2,000 in 2011 winning novel, That Which Should Not Be, can purchased now at Journal-Store. We are selling the electronic version a good two months before it will be published. If you buy it in the month of August I will also send you a free paperback copy of JournalStone's 2010 Warped Words. You can't beat that!
I guess that about wraps up July. Thanks everyone and keep in touch. We are so happy to be able to deliver quality books to each and every one of you. If you have any suggestions for us send me an e-mail at christophercpayne@journalstone.com.

The top three overall winning entries will be paid 5 cents per word for their submission. In addition to the top three overall winners, 2 submissions from each category will be chosen for publication. They will be published, but there is no prize money beyond the top three overall winners, so make sure your entry is one of the winning titles. |

That Which Should Not Be is the winner of JournalStone's 2011 Horror Writing Contest!
As a student at the mysterious Miskatonic University, Carter Weston is accustomed to the well-known reputation of the school's association in all things occult and supernatural. When Professor Thayerson sends him on a secretive search for a dark and powerful book, he doesn't even blink an eye.
Shortly after Weston reaches the seaside town of Anchorhead, in pursuit of the Incendium Maleficarum - The Inferno of the Witch, he meets a small group of fascinating men in a local tavern. The men share their stories with Weston, until deep into the stormy night; stories which are filled with mysterious creatures and evil. Two particular stories seem to deal directly with the very item which he seeks, proving these men have not met him by chance.
Will Weston find what he's come for, and what could this mean for the fate of the entire world? |

Captain America
Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a wisp of a man, is sick of being rejected by the military. When Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci) overhears a discussion between Rogers and a friend and he proves himself morally worthy, Erskine gives him a chance at Project Rebirth, which enhances Rogers' weak body into the epitome of maximum human potential. As Captain America, Rogers must defend his country against an evil threat who feels he has harnessed the power of the gods, the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).
I really wanted to love this movie. I just couldn't help it. There was something missing, something that would have given it that bit of oomph it needed to be really great.

The Va,mpire Stalker
What if the characters in a vampire novel left their world-and came into yours?
Amy is in love with someone who doesn't exist: Alexander Banks, the dashing hero in a popular series of vampire novels. Then one night, Amy meets a boy who bears an eerie resemblance to Alexander. In fact, he IS Alexander, who has escaped from the pages of the book and is in hot pursuit of a wicked vampire named Vigo. Together, Amy and Alexander set out to track Vigo and learn how and why Alexander crossed over. But when they begin to fall for each other, Amy wonders if she wants him to ever return to the realm of fiction. If my favorite fictional character came to life. I would die? I would faint? I would shriek? No, I would do all of the above. |
The Reluctant
Tom Crayder is living the American Dream. He has a wife he loves, a house to call a home and his very own plane to go with his fulfilled dream of being a pilot. But like many know, the American dream isn't always as carefree as some might like to believe.
Tom's consulting business is failing, he's behind on the loan payments to his plane and his wife works too much. And, he's bored. Turns out that the great life he has isn't very exciting.
How to spice things up???
He starts taking some jobs from a local crime boss, delivering people and cash to various locations and, because that just isn't fun enough, he starts flirting with a woman at the shooting range.
Tom finds himself caught up in a web of people and situations that turn his excitement into danger. How will he get himself out of the mess he's in, and...does he even want to?
This book is a bit of a departure from my usual paranormal genre but I enjoyed it anyway. The plot was easy to get into and easy to follow, and it took twists and turns that I didn't always see coming. Some of the things that happened to Crayder had me turning the pages to see what he would do to get out of his situation. |
