Greetings!
Welcome to JournalStone's April 2011 newsletter! As president, I want to thank you for your continued support as our company continues to grow, and growing we are.
We have two new authors we want to welcome into the JournalStone family. Both signed contracts in March 2011.
Avery K. Tingle, one of our JournalStone's 2010 Warped Words winners, has signed a deal for us to publish Atherean Defenders. I don't want to give anything away, but it's awesome.
Phil Cantrill signed a three-book deal with JournalStone. He has written a fantasy series that thoroughly drew me in with the first volume. I told him we had to publish all three. Look for the first book to come out as early as June 2011.
We, of course, don't want to take anything away from Annastaysia Savage whose debut novel Any Witch Way is being published April 8, 2011. Congratulations, Annastaysia! The reviews so far are overwhelmingly positive. I expect a possible 50 to 100 reviews popping up on Amazon on her big day. If you want to read an awesome teenage witch tale, grab your place in line now!
We also want to welcome Amy Lynn Eye into the JournalStone family. Amy is joining us as our Director of Web Content and will be coordinating all of our site postings, as well as our reviews. Congratulations Amy. We are excited to have you as a part of our growing team.
We are still accepting manuscripts, as well, but the line is starting to grow. We consider ourselves fortunate to be a part of your writing project. So, let's team up. Send in your submission today.
Christopher C. Payne
President

Entries are rolling in. We have met our minimum requirements, so the contest is officially a go. Make sure to get your entry in as early as possible to ensure it gets the attention it deserves. We might be inundated at the last minute, but we will do our best to give everything equal attention. Still, it is best not to wait until the last minute.
Submit your 75,000 words + manuscript/novel to christophercpayne@journalstone.com on or before June 1, 2011, and you will be entered. The winner will receive a $2,000 advance against future royalties and have his/her novel published by JournalStone. Grammar counts, people. Have it edited before you submit your entry.
The first-place winner is also eligible for active membership to the HWA (Horror Writers Association). Have you always wanted to join, but haven't met the criteria? You can now become an active member with all of its benefits and prestige!

A nice blog with writing tips and even some contract "do's" and "are you insane's"..... You could even give her JournalStone's contract if you were interested in seeing how we stack up. Hopefully we would be on the good side. Check out her blog if you want a nice reference point for writers.

Pick a fear, your worst fear. Is it vampires? Werewolves? Zombies? How about dealing with Hell? The Carnival of Fear has a fun house that promises to be the biggest and best scare you have ever had! Come on in...if you dare....
A small New York town is abuzz with excitement this Halloween. A carnival has set up shop overnight, and the citizens are ready for some Halloween thrills and chills. No one is immune to the pull of having the pants scared off of them on this holiday. It's a tradition...it's your right...and you're going to have fun, even if it kills you. And, in this carnival, you may just want to die.

Little Red Riding Hood. In what appears to be an underdressed, over-hairgelled and waxed (so many shiny, bare chests in the middle of winter!) Puritan colony under siege from a werewolf, Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) falls in love with Peter (Shiloh Fernandez). Sadly, Henry (Max Irons) is in love with Valerie, which makes Valerie's young-looking mother (Virginia Madsen) happy because he's rich. Valerie is not as thrilled and plans to run away with Peter. This part of the movie is pretty bad. Valerie and Peter have zero chemistry, making their scenes together almost painful to watch. Thankfully, these scenes are rescued by lovely visuals-the camera sweeps above the mountains surrounding the village, showing snow-capped peaks and white valleys. Only for brief moments are those scenes broken by Valerie's blue dress or Peter's black leathers, leaving my stomach somewhere in my feet more than once.

In an effort to bring you access to some awesome sites, JournalStone has stumbled upon Winning Writers. It is a site devoted to contests. Many are poetry contests, but there are also some short stories, and yes....they even have our contest listed. We're not sure how they got it, but kudos to them. Go Winning Writers. Click over, and check them out.

Refreshing. Does that seem like the right word to describe a book about witches in today's world? Well, whether you agree with me, I'm sticking with the word. REFRESHING! I just went on an adventure with a troop of witches - one of them not even able to tie his shoes yet. In the process, I met quite a few fun people and wish that it didn't have to end.
Miss Lauren and her best friend Nat have quite the life built up in Chicago. It may be cold, but the Windy City has been great to the two of them. Lauren is an untouchable real estate agent, and Nat is the yoga instructor everyone wants to see. They have been friends since high school, and nothing is going to tear these two apart. Well, they thought nothing ever could, until one day Lauren was trying an online grocery shopping site when she was sucked in by Nell to an online witches Web site. |

This is the kind of story that makes horror such an engrossing genre to me. A Mortal Glamour is a tale of dark, fetid corners of the human soul, of sins left unpaid and hatred ignored, until something ignites a character's potential for evil. This is horror in the vein of Hellraiser, Black Swan, and The Shining -- horror about humans who might have supernatural help committing the evils they do, but the potential for that evil was always their own.
