Description:
This class will be an exploration of the 1800's early American History through the eyes of the "Little House on the Prairie" book series (books 1-4 for 1st year and 5-8 for 2nd year students), with many excursions into history including Homesteaders on the Prairie, Native American Indians, Mountain Men, Gold Rush, with hands on activities including dressing & acting the times, cooking foods on an open fire, making simple foods, gifts, toys, & crafts like quilts, fibers & weavings, homemade ice-cream, butter & pancakes, AND having camp-outs in 1800 attire. View information about the books: http://www.littlehousebooks.com/books
Book 1-4 STUDENTS and Book 5-8 STUDENTS will be divided for ten minutes of discussion at the beginning of the period. Both sets of students will do the same activities.
Boys of course are invited because without the men, the Prairie would not have been settled! Pa and Manly will be discussed.
We will do a lot of READING during this course. Your child will read on their own or be read to (or a combination there of) an average of 8-10 pages a day (for a 5 day school week) and complete 4 books in this series. There will be a reading record kept with incentives. Also, your kids will have a few questions to mull over while they read so they are prepared to participate in a short class discussion. Hopefully we will encourage our kids to love reading by delving into these books and experiencing them together as a group.
Standards:
Ability to participate in group discussion, be read to or read to self at home, participate in class activities with good attitude. Ability to be creative and have a good time.
