In 1986, Enabling Devices founder Dr. Steven Kanor was invited on a trip to China by the son of the premier at the time, Teng Hsiao Ping. Himself a quadriplegic, the premier's son was focused on the advances in assistive tech-nology, specifically the types of devices Dr. Kanor had created. The 16-day trip was arranged by the National Cristina Foundation and sanctioned by Vice President George H.W. Bush. On it, Dr. Kanor visited numerous institu-tions for the disabled as well as factories with handicapped workers in and around Beijing. |
