With the mild temperatures we had this winter, the forecast is set for lots of mosquitos. Oklahoma is in the EXTREME danger zone for heartworm transmission. Make sure you are giving your pets heartworm preventative EVERY month.

Some people think that because their dog is an "inside" dog they do not need to give them heartworm preventative. Well, they are wrong! No dog is an inside dog (please tell me you take them outside to do their business!) It just takes one mosquito bite to infect your precious pug.

The cost of a six month supply of heartworm preventative is about $35 (the equivalent of 8 Venti Mochas.)
The cost of not giving your pug his preventative could be his life.

Click here for more information on this deadly disease.

and

for our 12 New Rescues

Well, it's raining pugs again! Yesterday, after we heard about the poor little pug living on the porch, we took in four more pugs. We have one under a year old coming in on Saturday and three in shelters we are getting soon. Needless to say, our medical bills are climbing and we know that summer is the worst time for owners relinquishing their pets. It is also a slow time for adoptions because people are going on vacations, etc.

If you can ChipIn any amount for these precious pugs, or purchase an item through our Amazon Wish List (items for the new pugs will be listed soon) we would appreciate it so much.

Also, we desperately need fosters for all of the new pugs. If you can help, please fill out a foster application. If you are interested in adopting O'Malley or any of our other wonderful pugs, please fill out our adoption application.

Thank you for your support!

Pug of the Month

Buster
Buster
WE ARE SO THANKFUL FOR ALL OF OUR FOSTER FAMILIES! Without them, Homeward Bound Pug Rescue couldn't save the amazing number of pugs that we do. Read the letter we just received from one of our fosters. It is evident that we have wonderful PUGS up for adoption AND wonderful FOSTERS.

Buster is great on a leash, we go on walks to the park ( which he loves). I don't crate him because he's housebroken and rarely has accidents. I let him sleep with me, he's a happy boy if he can just lie at your feet! In the car he cracks me up, because he loves to stick his head out the window when we're going slow, but as soon as we pick up speed he slowly comes back into the car, and then acts like he's not interested in the window, but the moment you slow down he's ready for me to roll the window back down.

Buster does a couple of tricks. He has to sit before he gets his food, and does come and stay pretty consistently. He's a brave little guy and loves to explore. He's very bright and such a little gentleman. Buster LOVES his squeaky toys, and I like to rough house with him on the floor. He listens to commands, lies down when you ask and won't jump if you tell him to stop. He can be ornery. One time he snuck in a stole a teddy bear he had his eye on, but he made us laugh when he brought it back.

He's such a sweetheart, he wants nothing more to hang out and play with us. He's great at reading our moods, like if we have a lot of homework he sits patiently by our feet until we're done, and then he's ready to play. Buster one of the best dogs I've ever been lucky enough to have around, and I won't lie I love him so much, and if I weren't going to China he'd be mine in a second. The selfish part of me wants to keep around for as long as possible, but he deserves a family!

Buster has osteoarthritis and will need supplements and a good diet to keep him feeling good.
If you are interested in adopting sweet Buster, please fill out the adoption application.

* If you are or have been a foster for Homeward Bound, we would love to hear your story and share it with our supporters! Please email your foster story (and photos if you have them) to homewardboundpugs@gmail.com and we will feature it in the newsletter. Thanks!

My Three Pugs....

For a breed of dog that is known for looking alike, my pugs look nothing like one another.

My first pug is Kirby. He wandered into my yard on a 115-degree day. No collar, no microchip, nothing. I knew pugs couldn't take the heat well so the first thing I did was get him some water and take him inside to the cool kitchen
floor. After he cooled down we had him scanned for a chip, but there was none. Our next step was to post signs around the area and check the lost dogs sites. I received only one phone call, probably a prank call from a kid. But it was at that moment I knew that after having Kirby here for a few days, I was really attached to him. I kept my eye out for lost pug postings, never saw anything, and knew it was meant to be.

Shortly after that me and my boyfriend - and our new pug, Kirby - went to Michigan. Kirby was so good on that 17-hour car ride. And he loved it. Then I stumbled onto some pug people on Facebook and they told me about
these local pug meet-ups. I went to the first one and had a blast. Next, I heard of this big event called Puggerfest, so we went. Oh my! I was in pug heaven! Kirby got so much attention and won the award for the best costume. And he was King of Puggerfest! Kirby has so much personality and it really shows.

My second pug is Bruno. One of the girls from the pug meet-up called me before Puggerfest and asked if I would mind giving a foster dog a ride so he could be with the rest of the pugs that were up for adoption. I said I would, but expected the worst. Instead, I got the best. Bruno and Kirby became friends fast. Bruno is a little shorter, chubbier, and has an underbite with a tongue that hangs out. I told myself I could not get attached, that Bruno would probably be adopted. But that didn't happen, so he rode back to Wichita with us and I dropped him at his foster mom's house. From time to time I would send a text to see how ol' Bruno was doing. Then Pug-O-Ween came around, and I asked his foster mom if she was going to bring him. She had to work so I asked if I could come take him so he could play with the other pugs. Once I picked him up, the foster mom told me her work schedule had changed so much that she isn't around for him and that her and the girl who runs the Wichita Pug Rescue thought I would be a great foster mother for him. So, of course, I said 'YES!'

That brings me to my third pug, Jitters. He was glued to me for weeks, he had been affected so deeply by what he had been through that he trusted no one. My friend, Gail, named him Jitters because he hid from her for days behind a dog house and just shook to death. Then he finally let his guard down and became more friendly toward her. When Jitters arrived from Oklahoma, I went right away to pick him up. You could tell he was terrified. I could barely operate my car because Jitters was so close to me. Eventually, he became so attached to my two pugs and us that I couldn't let him down. We decided he would stay with us because he's so happy here. Jitters has a wilder personality, and loves to run and play with toys.

Bruno is a lazy pug; he's happy just to hold the couch down and Kirby is the boss and a happy medium between Jitters and Bruno. Jitters is a taller, skinnier pug. So I have small, medium, and large pug. It's perfect. And to me they look nothing alike and I see what individuals they really are.

I love them all.
