Pugs in the News

A small pug dog can phone

emergency services when her owner is in danger and even wake him when he has nightmares. Pei Pei has trained for two years as a service dog to retired US army police officer James Taylor, who suffers post-traumatic stress disorder and hearing loss.

The dog has been trained to deal with a number of situations as a constant companion to Mr Taylor, who is also prone to falls.

Footage shows Mr Taylor shouting "Go get help!" at his home in Vero Beach, Florida, at which Pei Pei runs to a phone on the living room floor and presses a button with her paws

that automatically dials emergency operators.

The dog cannot communicate with emergency operators in any way but knowing Pei Pei can make the call is a big comfort for Mr Taylor, he told Florida TV news station WPTV5. And that is not Pei Pei's only talent. If Mr Taylor feels panic among a crowd of people, the pug makes a circle around him so people stay back. Pei Pei also runs in circles if the smoke alarm goes off and can alert Mr Taylor when the doorbell rings. If the veteran has a nightmare, the dog licks his face to wake him up. "Without her, I couldn't imagine my life. I'd probably be home-bound a lot," Mr Taylor said. The veteran and his wife adopted Pei Pei from an animal shelter and spent two years training her through the dog training facility Dogs for Life.

Jessica and her babies
The babies continue to grow and the smallest opened her eyes yesterday! Jessica is now the PERFECT mom and so protective of the pups. If anyone gets too close she tells them off in a hurry. When put outside she rushes back to be with her babies. Once she figured out this mom thing, she really took it seriously. She has enough milk now and we no longer are tube feeding. Babies are still under a pound and seem to be progressing normally but they will probably be small adults. Please do continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

If you can contribute to our ChipIn, we would be so grateful. Keeping Jessica at the vet with 24 hours supervision was quite expensive. We also still have some items on our Amazon Wishlist if you would like to help that way.

Thanks so much for all of your support and the puggy love you are sending our way! We appreciate it more than we can ever say.
Looking at this picture, though, you can see why
we think it is all worthwhile.

Dutchess

Pam Case

Duchess is one of our sweet seniors being fostered in Wichita with her brother Duke. Last week she became very ill and was in the hospital. Many of you have been asking how she is doing, so we will give you an update straight from her foster mommy Holly:

"I don't even know what to say about Duchess!  The vets are stumped. Her white count is elevated again and the ulcers in her eyes are not healing at all. She is no longer throwing up and she's eating well. She's not running a fever, seems to be in no pain except it just breaks my heart to she her try to get around, bumping into things.

The vet has given her a steroid shot today which really perked her up and she even had her eyes open for a while. They had pulled her off all medication when she was throwing up but now they have started her on a different antibiotic that hopefully won't upset her stomach.  My vet is contacting a friend  of hers who specializes in ophthalmology so we will know more soon. They also checked other blood levels...pancreas, liver etc but I haven't heard anything about those results today.  She
needs lots and lots of prayers right now...I just wish they could figure out what was wrong
. Please pray that she makes a full recovery."

We will update our Facebook page with more information as we receive it.

Velvet
Pam Case
Velvet is doing so well in her new home! She's been spending her days lounging around on various dog beds and pillows around the house. Sometimes, I'll catch her snuggling with her new sister and chewing on bones, or find them sitting in the window together watching the yard. She's the sweetest girl, and we are very happy to have her!

Thanks so much for helping us adopt our new family member,

-Robin Yarrington

After

After reading the latest pug news thought I would update you on my crew. It's hard to believe that 1 1/2 yrs ago I checked my e-mail and saw one from you asking if someone in Tulsa could go to the pound and pick up a little boy and bring him to the vet. I called and volunteered and you assured me that would be all I had to do. Hahaha. I'm such a sucker! I picked up that little boy that they called Pugsley and will never forget the look on the lady's face when she asked "why are you bothering with this old guy?" So sad. I wish now I had gotten her name to show her "this old guy".

After a few surgeries (teeth and neuter) and blood transfusions there still was no foster able to take him so he came back to my house and I was calling him Frank. He worked his magic on Josh (my husband) and those two built a bond that Josh hadn't enjoyed with a pug in a long time (our girls have taken to me) and the boys grew to adore him even though he doesn't care for the boys. My oldest insisted he was a Sparky not Frank. After a few months Josh told me that he didn't want him going to "just another foster", but you could tell his eyes were saying he didn't want him going anywhere.

He hasn't complained of back pain in a long time. He loves to go on walks and romps around like a puppy when he is on a leash. We still don't think he is really ten like the vet says, but who knows. It's amazing what good food and some love can do. He looks amazing. Keep up the good work.
