Top 10 Reasons to Adopt a Senior Pug

Pam Case

1- Look at Cindy's sweet grey face. How can you resist?

2- Housetrained. Need I say more?

3- They seem to know they have been given a second chance and really do bond closely with their new owners.

4- They don't chew shoes, furniture or homework.

5- Can you say, "couch potato"?

6- What you see is what you get. You know their personality and if they will fit your lifestyle.

7- They sleep through the night so there is no need to wake up early for potty time or because they are ready to play or eat at 5 in the morning.

8- You have plenty of pugs to chose from! Rescues take in very few puppies.

9- Senior dogs don't need constant attention. While they may follow you around wherever you go (mine are like velcro), they don't need you to play with them all of the time or take them on long walks.

10- You have saved a life! Shelters euthanize older dogs to make room for more adoptable puppies.

Please think about adopting an older pug. So many of our fosters and adopters say the seniors are the best behaved, most loving dogs they have ever had. How could you pass on that?

Pupdate

Petunia

Many of you have been asking about Petunia and we want to give you an update. She is out of the hospital and doing very well! The vets and the staff at Neel did a wonderful job and are so dedicated, kind and caring. They really did go above and beyond for this special girl. Petunia is with Gail and is being spoiled rotten. Unfortunately, Petunia's treatment cost an astronomical $3,700 and for now her monthly medications are $150.00. It will be a few more months before she is recovered completely, but Petunia is on her way to living a full and healthy life.

We are still a long way from being able to pay the vet bill, so if you would like to donate you can do so here:

or send a check to Homeward Bound Pug Rescue c/o Gail Tucker
1702 Vanessa Dr., Norman, OK 73071

Thank you so much for your prayers and support. You came through when Petunia needed you most and we are forever grateful.

Neel Veterinary Hospital

Providing loving care to Homeward Bound pugs since 2006

Greetings all,

In honor of Valentine's Day we are going to shine the spotlight on our wonderful senior pugs. They are the ultimate love pugs and are so very special. These sweet pugs have lived for years with their family and have been devoted companions, only to be surrendered or abandoned in their twilight years. Can you imagine how confused and sad they are? People tell us the reason they don't want to adopt a senior is because, "The pug won't live very long and we don't want to go through the pain of losing them so soon." Tell that to the family who adopted a 10 year old pug. Their pug is now 17! You would think he is part Energizer Bunny the way he keeps going and going and going! Please consider adopting one of our sweet seniors, they will surely be the love of your life.

Here are a few of the special seniors who are ready to shower you with puggie love and kisses:

Esther

I have to admit that Esther is one of my favorite pugs. If I could have more than two pets in my apartment I would adopt this funny gal in a heartbeat! Esther has an interesting story to tell. She was rescued from a puppy mill and was adopted through another rescue. After thinking she had a forever home, she wound up at a local shelter with an infected eye that was so bad it had to be removed. We are told Esther is thirteen years old but don't tell her that as she believes herself to be much younger, and besides she is deaf and wouldn't hear you anyway. Gail's nickname for Esther is Bat Girl because she has the cutest ears that stand up all the time. She is such a sweet, trusting girl and deserves a family who will never abandon her.

Cindy

Cindy is a sweet ol' girl who loves everybody. She is a little shy at first but warms up quickly. Her foster family says she is the perfect dog because she gets along with other dogs, people, doesn't bark and is housebroken. She requires a bit of soft food mixed in with her kibble to help her eat due to lack of teeth. It seems she may have some visual and audio impairments but it doesn't faze her one bit. Will you consider adopting this super sweet senior who still has lots of love to give?

Duke and Dutchess

Look at those tongues, have you ever seen anything so cute? Duke and Duchess are eight years old and have never been apart, so we promised we would adopt them together. They are sweethearts and Duchess is a little spitfire living up to the black female characteristics. They are both laid back but Duchess has more energy than Duke. Like any pug, they love being where you are. Duchess has started playing with toys and sometimes they do play with each other. When Duke gets excited his whole body shakes and he almost falls over! They get along great with their foster fur siblings and enjoy sleeping in the foster family's bed. These babies will make the perfect lap dogs for a family that is home a lot and has a nice quiet environment.

Spanky

Spanky lost his home from the Joplin tornado. His family had to move to a place that doesn't allow him. He is eight years old and blind in his left eye.  He needs daily eye drops, but it only takes a second to do and is really not a big deal at all. Spanky is a sweet boy who smiles all of the time. He deserves a loving family to call his own.

Sam

Sam is a handsome ten year old. He came in with Bear and is his daddy. Sam and Bear were in a Wichita shelter and didn't understand how they got there. He is loving, housebroken and is a quiet and laid back guy. Sam would be the perfect pug for any household. Anyone would be lucky to have him. He just wants to be loved. Our seniors are special and have so much love to give. Please consider giving Sam a forever home that will let him receive all the love he deserves.

Elmer
Pam Case

Elmer is doing great! We just had a party for him last weekend to celebrate his one year anniversary with us. He's in good health and loves to snuggle and play with his pug sister Maggie. Here are some pictures of him enjoying his anniversary cake!

Sasha

Pam Case

Sasha's favorite thing to do in the morning is to curl up in my lap and snore...lol!  Last night she woke me up snoring and barking in her sleep.  I wish I could have recorded it before she quit because it was the cutest thing ever. I'd never heard a dog snore as she inhaled and then barked as she exhaled...all in sequence like that. Gabby and Sasha have really bonded and are constantly lounging together on their chaise lounge doggie bed. They make me laugh everyday!

Take Care!

Bubba

Sweet Bubba was an older pug that I fell in love with the moment I saw him. He stole my heart and to this day owns it like no other pet has ever done. He has taught me patience and love beyond measure. He is always ready to snuggle with me when my day has gone badly and cares not a whit whether I've made a mistake in my work. He only knows that I'm home and he's happy about that! I thought I was saving him when, in fact, he has saved me!

Pearl

(Pearl is on the right)

I rescued Pearl back on November 5, 2010. She is just a joy to have in my home. She has been a blessing to me at a much needed time in my life. Pearl of course has adapted well with us and we love her to death. My other two pugaroos, Cagney & Pepper love her so much. As I am writing you they are all snuggled up together on the couch right next to me. I am glad I was looking on the site and decided to put my application in when I did. There is always a reason for what we do & I certainly know that Pearl was meant to be with us! My veterinarian loves her too! My family has come to love her so much and they all call her "mama", like they used to call my LaceyJ, who passed on 8-9-08.  I just know God gave Pearl to me, a Gift that He only knew would be something that I soo needed and at the precise time in my life that I needed her too! Every time I look at Pearl, I thank God that I was able to rescue her and have her in my life. I have the most wonderful three puggiez in my life and I am so Blessed! Again thank you for what you do, without you all and your work I would have never met my Precious Pearl!  May God Bless You for all you do!

 Hugs & Pugs,

Rudy At The Wedding

Homeward Bound is happy to announce that one of our former pugs was part of a wedding celebration. He was a cherished member of the wedding party and even wore a tux for the day!

Rudy's dad and mom were kind enough to tell us all about their special day:

Rudy was not in the actual ceremony because he was not allowed in the church, but he did party hardy with us after the ceremony. Rudy is part of our family, no way would he not be a part of our big day. He had a BLAST. He's going to be a brother now in fall to a human brother/sister! :)
