Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a fun time of year, but it can present a problem for our furry friends. Here are a few tips to make sure everyone has a fun, safe time trick-or-treating

1- Keep the candy out of your pet's reach. We all know chocolate
is poisonous, and some candies contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to pets. Wrappers and lollypop sticks can also cause blockage or perforations  of the intestine, so keep the candy in the pantry until you are ready to hand  it out Halloween night.

2- We all think dogs in Halloween costumes look adorable. Some dogs might agree, while others can't wait to get the d@#* thing off. If you are going to dress your pet up, and you know you are, keep them in your sight to make sure they don't chew or tear off bits of the costume or try and wiggle out of it and get stuck.

3- Parties can be trouble as well, especially if your immature friend from college, the immature friend's bratty kid and/or alcohol is involved. Some people may think it is funny to feed your pet chili or tortilla chips and queso or even to get your pet drunk, but in reality it can be deadly. If you can't trust your guests to act like adults, then it is best to keep your pet in a crate or gated in a quiet area of the house.

4- Trick-or-Treaters coming to the door can be exciting for a dog. Some dogs love the attention they get when they greet the kids, while others are afraid of the strange zombie creatures reaching out to grab them. It is always best to keep your pet behind a baby gate if they want to help you greet the kiddos, but if your pet seems afraid of the monsters at the door, go ahead and put them safely in another part of the house so they don't become stressed.

5- Keep your pet indoors at all times unless supervised! Some children can be cruel, and not just to black cats. Their "tricks" can consist of opening your gate and letting your pet loose, stealing him to take home for themselves or even hurting your poor four legged baby.

Homeward Bound wishes you and your pets a safe and enjoyable Howl-o-ween!

September Contest

 Congratulations to Wisconsin supporter

Susan Skibba, winner of the black pug earrings!

Dear friends,

Puggerfest is over and I finally feel somewhat human again.  I want to thank all of our volunteers and supporters of Homeward Bound for everything they did to make this the best Puggerfest ever. It was an awesome day and I think a good time was had by all. The weather was perfect and attendance was the highest we have had so far, topping more than 700 people coming in the gate.  We couldn't have done it without you and I am so thankful for your continued support.  Vet bills have been paid and there is a little left in reserve for puggies coming in.

Puggerfest will be September 29 next year so dig out those Hawaiian shirts as the theme will be troPUGal.

Pug hugs,

Gail Tucker
Director

Puggerfest Highlights 2011

The weather was perfect, the pugs (and people) were on their best behavior and, as you can see from the photos, everyone had a blast!

Good food, good friends, fun activities and lots of pugs made for a fantastic day. The pug races were hilarious. Some dogs ran like racehorses, some got distracted by all the people who wanted to pet them, a few jumped the track and ran off to have fun in the park and others (like mine) just sat there with a look that said "You expect me to do WHAT? I don't think so." Have a look for yourself: links to the pug races are here and here .

The Puggerfest King and Queen were quite proud at their coronation, but Meka
told Gail she thought she should be queen of Puggerfest. Gail told her she couldn't enter as it would  look fixed. When her back was turned Meka stole the costume and gave her a "see if you can stop me" look!

Here are photos of the actual King and Queen. What a regal pair they made!

On the left is King Kirby Black. We did not get the name of the Queen, so please let us know and we will announce it in next month's newsletter!

Thank you all for coming. We hope you will join us next year on September 29th.

Meet and Greet!

Homeward Bound's Wag-o-Ween
Saturday, Oct. 29th from 12pm to 4pm
 A1 Pet Emporium

Come out and meet several of our wonderful pugs! If you are thinking about adopting but just aren't sure who would like to have as your new family member, this is the perfect time to see our pugs in action!

There will also be a bake sale, and all the proceeds will support Homeward Bound. If you would like to donate food for the sale, please contact Trish at 405-749-1738.

Also, A1 will have all sorts of goodies for the pooches, a costume contest, bobbing for wieners, and all sorts of other fun games. Seeing all the pugs in their Halloween costumes is something you don't want to miss!
Animal communicator Pam Case will also be there.

We hope to see you there!

*We will also have small booths on the 23rd at Dogtoberfest and the Ghost Runners 5K on October 30th, but neither of these events benefit Homeward Bound. We will just be there to enjoy the day, show off some pugs and mingle with other rescues and the public.

MY NAME IS MEKA

Remember me? When I came to Homeward Bound I was very sick. I had pretty much given up hope that I would ever get better. Most of my beautiful fur was gone due to infected skin, my body was constantly in pain and I was kept in a crate most of the time. I was so embarrassed, as I knew I smelled bad. It was painful for me to walk because my toenails had grown into the pads on my feet. On top of that, my eyes and ears were infected. In order to get better I had to take so much medicine I was a walking pharmacy! But thanks to all the wonderful and generous people that support Homeward Bound I was able to get well and now I must admit I am quite beautiful, as I am sure you will all agree. I feel so good now that I will even play and act silly at times.

On the day of Puggerfest Momma Gail gave me a wonderful surprise, she said to get ready because her good friend Susan was taking me to my new family! I was so happy that I dressed in my Sunday best just to meet them:

Lots of tears were shed as I was getting in the car to leave, but I know Momma Gail is happy that I have finally found the forever home I deserve.  My new Momma is feeding me good food and taking care of my every need. Oh, and did I mention she is spoiling me rotten? I am so very happy here! I miss my Momma Gail and all the wonderful people who gave me so much love and support in my dark times. I just want to say thank you to everyone for continuing to keep me in your prayers and for helping with all my expenses so I could get better.  I will never forget your kindness.

Love, Meka

Now if you shop through the

Adopt- A-Shelter website, companies like Amazon, Walmart, Ulta, iTunes and more will personally donate anywhere from .5 to 10% of what you spend straight to Homeward Bound. This is an incredible opportunity for us and a free, easy and painless way for you to help. Just go to Adopt-A-Shelter's Homeward Bound Pug Rescue link and click through to your desired store. Adopt-A-Shelter will not record your personal information in any way. No matter how small the purchase you can help support us without it costing you a thing!

I did a test purchase from iTunes yesterday. I clicked through from Adopt-A-Shelter, logged in to my iTunes account and bought my songs. (I'm not telling you what I got because you'll think I'm a dork). It added no extra money to my purchase and iTunes donated 2.5% of my total. The money they donate comes from a general fund Amazon has set up for charity donations.

Every quarter Adopt-A-Shelter will send checks to each shelter for what they earned. Remember, the Christmas season is here and many of you will be purchasing online. Let's make that check more than the 63 cents I earned Homeward Bound!!

Thank you all so much for your help!

Happy shopping!

Liz
