Not sure how to help HWB? Stop in and buy a bag of Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream dog food. Tell us it is for Gail and we will make sure it gets to her. The foster pugs can go through 2 large bags a week, so donating food is a great way to support your favorite rescue!

Doggone Good Treat Recipes
We all know how much pugs love treats. We also know how difficult it is not to give them too many. If you are going to spoil them it is best to do it by offering healthy treats rather than the popular brands you see on commercials.
Here is a quick quiz: Which dog treat ingredients are healthier? A) Corn gluten meal, sugar, and bacon fat preserved with BHA, or B) Carrots, oatmeal and apple. If you said "A" I am going to strangle you!
Below are a few treat recipes that are easy to make, inexpensive and healthy. Heck if you get hungry you could even eat some yourself!
Apple Carrot Treats
From the kitchen of Mary Lemens
In a large bowl add
1 shredded carrot
1 large apple grated, include peel
1/8 cup honey
1/2 cup water
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 cups oat flour
1 cup oatmeal
Mix and roll out to about 1/4 inch thick. Use a pizza cutter to cut into squares. 1x1 inch square is a good size. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees until hard (about 1 hour)
Peanut Butter Honey Treats
From the kitchen of Joanne Nelson
In a large bowl beat 2 eggs, then add in one cup peanut butter and mix. Add 1/2 cup honey. Slowly add 3 cups flour and mix well. The mixture will be very thick. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick and cut to desired size using a pizza cutter. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.
Pup Pops
From the kitchen of Casey Lummus
This is a great treat you can share with your pug on a hot summer day:
Mix 1 quart orange or apple juice (real juice, no sugar or other additives)
1 mashed banana
and 1/2 cup yogurt.
Pour into ice cube trays or small popsicle molds. Freeze for four hours and enjoy!

Hello Friends,
This month we have two furtastic opportunities for you to support Homeward Bound:
Jewelry Fundraiser!
The evening of Thursday, June 16th and all day Friday June 17th Amy Fletcher is hosting a jewelry fundraiser at the online store Three Scoops Of Vanilla. When you order during this time 25% of sales will go to our rescue. The store has pug charms especially for our rescue and you can personalize a charm with your pet's name if you wish.

There are several beautiful designs to choose from. My favorite is the Rainbow Bridge bracelet, a touching tribute to a pet who has crossed over. Remember, the fundraiser is for a limited time only, Thursday night June 16th and all day Friday, June 17th. If you have any questions regarding the fundraiser you may email Erin Furman. |

Mission Accomplished
The Almost Home Pug Run is complete! After a 17 hour drive from Oklahoma to Wisconsin the pugs were finally able to meet their new families. The last I checked the volunteers were still passed out from exhaustion. The Pug Run took many hours of planning, much hair pulling (human, not pug!) and several bottles of wine to prepare for but was well worth it. Mary, from Homeward Bound Wisconsin had this to say:
The May pug transport to WI went off with out a hitch or a baby delivery! I found out that my second driver was very pregnant and a high risk pregnancy at that. I told her I was not delivering a baby in the next 2 days and she promised she would hold off till she got home.
Our passenger list was extensive, 36 pugs, including two which were very afraid to be handled by people. We had some great seniors and some adorable youngsters. We had a black male that was sure he was a gift to all females and wanted to have many private moments. Poor dude was denied by us so sulked in his crate for a couple of hours. We did well driving up, the pugs only fussed a couple of times. We found potty stops four times and fed them twice in the van. We ended up running about an hour behind and when we pulled up to Petco in Green Bay we were greeted by about 50 people all clamering to peek inside to find their pug. The pugs all got walked and we went inside to get the paperwork started. Our first adoption was Chester, he was a special rider and could barely be touched with out backing away. His new family was there when we arrived and took him out in the grass to let him calm down and keep him from the crowds. I hear from them that he is beginning to come to his new mama for a treat. You can't imagine how big a step it is for this little guy. It brings tears to my eyes just writing this. Chester will always be special to me.
As the afternoon progressed and the pugs went with their new families the foster parents began to come and meet their new friends. Several of these pugs have already been adopted by their fosters, leaving the number of pugs still available here at seven. Not a bad number at all. One of my personal fosters will be adopted this weekend, which leaves me with two. Carmen who is the other pug afraid of being handled and Buttercup, who has one of the most adorable personalities I have seen. No one has told her she is blind and can't climb on the second shelf in our pantry. Nope. So, another amazing journey done. Happy endings for so many sweet puggies. A special thanks to Morgan who kept her word about not going into labor on the trip!Mary, Homeward Bound Wisconsin

Rescue Day and Dog Wash
We had a blast at the 2nd annual Rescue Day and Dog Wash. The weather was beautiful, the pugs got a good scrubbing and we met so many nice people. Shandell Nash took some stunning photos of the festivities:

Puggerfest 2011 Volunteer Opportunities
Saturday, October 1st Stars and Stripes Park, OKC
Much like Santa at Christmas, the preparations for Puggerfest begin the day after the last pug trots out of the gate in October at Stars and Stripes Park. Right now Gail is deep in planning and is worrying herself sick thinking no one will help, donate or show up. Please help ease her mind by offering to volunteer, donate silent auction items or become a corporate sponsor. Please send Gail an email and let her know how you can support HWB. She appreciates it, and so do the hundreds of people like myself who look forward to seeing old friends, making new friends, entering pugs in contests and bidding on tons of fantastic things! For our out of town attendees we have reserved a block of rooms at the airport LaQuinta Inn, Oklahoma City. Reserve through the front desk or ask for group sales at 405-942-0638 and tell them you are with Homeward Bound Pug Rescue, Puggerfest. You can join us for dinner Friday night and a pizza party Saturday night after Puggerfest. The discount room rate rate is around $60.00 a night and the hotel is obviously pet friendly. We look forward to seeing you there!

Pupdate
Meka before: After: Talk about night and day! As you can tell, Meka is doing so much better. Her coat is growing in nicely and is so soft and shiny. She is now a happy and curious girl who loves to cuddle and play with the young pugs. Meka is thriving in her foster home and will be up for adoption in a few months.

Happy Tails
Winston (formerly Porkchop)
Just wanted to send a quick note on how fabulous Porkchop is doing in his new forever home! His name is now WInston "Winny". I thought he needed a distinguished, yet fun name. He's the man of house now! It's only been a couple days and his progress already is unreal. And the two pugs of the house are already bffs! They cuddle everywhere! He is coming to me and puts his paw up asking for pets. He loves scratches behind his ears and belly rubs. And I swear he smiles during them. He greets me at the door and is getting used to our walks (no accidents)! On Friday night, I wasn't sure if he would want to go in the bed, but Zoe ran up and down the side of the bed looking down at him and whining until I put him on the bed. Then they cozied right up. I'm letting him go at his own pace and he's already eating up all the loving! Zoe is teaching him to play, too. Thank you both for helping me find a big brother for Zoe, they are a perfect match. His is just the sweetest little man! He is quickly beginning to realize he is safe and loved. He is also learning there are lots of comfy places to lay, he loves the pug beds, the couch and all of us cuddling together. I can't wait to see how he continues to blossom and enjoy the good life. Thanks for all your help and getting him home! - Amanda
