With tears of joy we send these sweet pugs to their new forever homes:
Harrison, Ferdinand, Sophie, Butterbean, and George.

Thank you! |
We would like to say thank you to all who participated in Kathy Highfill's Scentsy fundraiser. It was a great success and very much appreciated. I'm sure you are grateful to have your new candles to mask the smell of wet, muddy dog that would have otherwise permeated your home after all of the snow storms we have had! |

Hello Fellow Homeward Bound Supporters,
Because so many of you (well, Gail at least) have shown an interest in a Homeward Bound newsletter I thought I would give it a try. Whether it be a monthly, bimonthly or whenever I get around to it newsletter I will do my best to write fun, informative articles and keep you abreast of gatherings and fundraisers.
Before beginning I would like to preemptively apologize to my 12th grade teacher Mrs. Rathburn for my misspellings, terrible punctuation and terribler grammar. I would also like to tip my hat to the late, great Ernest Hemingway who would most likely be very proud of my run and run and run-on sentences.
Cheers!
Liz Lummus
Editor, HWB Newsletter

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Snot
February is the month associated with roses, chocolate and sappy Valentine's cards. Since your pug may not appreciate any of those expressions of your undying devotion why don't you take him to the vet instead? After all, nothing says, "I love you" like having a vet jab a needle into your pug's patootie, shine bright lights in his eyes, inspect every nook and cranny and insert a thermometer where no thermometer should EVER be inserted.
A yearly checkup is vital to your pug's health. Keep in mind that you are not just taking him in for his shots. Besides administering vaccines, the vet will do a thorough exam checking your pug's eyes, ears, heart, lungs and well, everything. Depending on your pug's age and overall health the vet may suggest blood tests and/or a dental as well.
Preventive care can stave off serious health problems in the future. No one wants a sick puggie and you can sleep well at night (unless your pug snores) knowing you have done everything possible to keep him healthy and happy.

Pug of the Month
Gidget
Gidget is two years old and a bundle of energy, but very very sweet. She has a habit of licking anything (even the air!)and seems to think all objects are food related (even the air!). Gidget would do best in a home with no toddlers as her energy level might be too much for them and if they had food in their hands it would be gone! Gidget does not like to be left alone and would love to be pampered and spoiled in a home where someone is there most of the time. She does take daily medication for seizures but it is very inexpensive and no big deal. Some people will not even consider a pug with special needs, but they do not know what they are missing. These pugs want a home so badly and are very devoted to their owners. Gidget is waiting for her new family to find her and see how very special she is.
If you are interested in adopting Gidget please complete an application.

Happy Tails
Fuji and Towelie
Dear Homeward Bound Pug Rescue,
Hi, my name is Towelie. Just a week ago I was an only child. I'm one and a half years old so I still have quite a bit of energy and I've been begging my mommy for a brother or sister and finally last Friday she came home with a new brother. She said that the new brother is a present from the Homeward Bound Pug Rescue, well I don't really know who you guys are but I still wanted to write you guys a thank you note and tell you guys that I love my new brother Fuji very much and I'm so happy that he has joined me and my mommy. I promise to take very good care of him and will "tried" my hardest to share my toys with him....except for the duck, that's mine.
Again, thank you guys so so much for my awesome brother
Sincerely,
Towelie Velotta

We would love to print your story and publish photos of your happy family. But remember, don't send anything you wouldn't want the whole world (or at least 423 people) to see!

How Much Do You REALLY Know About Rescue?
A quick TRUE/FALSE quiz
1. Rescues get free veterinary service.
FALSE We get a 20 to 30% discount. Vet costs have increased substantially over the last few years. A healthy pug costs a minimum of $200. An unhealthy pug can cost more than $1000!
2. Rescues get lots of donations to help with costs.
FALSE Most our income comes from adoption fees. Donations are sporadic and something we can't count on, although we certainly do appreciate them.
3. Adopting a rescue pug is like adopting a child.
TRUE These are our "children" and we want the best possible homes. Pugs that come to rescue have been through a lot and we screen very carefully to make sure their next home is their forever home.
4. It is better to adopt a puppy than an older dog.
FALSE Puppies love to chew things they shouldn't and can be difficult to house train. They have a lot of energy that some people are just not ready for. On the other hand, older pugs come with good house manners and are generally more laid back. These special older dogs seem to really appreciate their new owners and quickly become a devoted family member.
5. Adopting a rescue pug is better than buying a puppy. TRUE Puppy mills and back yard breeders are notorious for housing their animals in horrendous conditions. The animals are starved, neglected, subjected to abuse and thrown out like garbage once they have outlived their "usefulness". Our rescue takes in dozens of these pugs a year and they are very difficult to place, as it takes some time to get them to trust humans.

Pug in need
Eli
Eli came to us from another rescue and is the sweetest boy ever. Eli has grade four luxating patellae and will need surgery when we can afford it. He will run with the others but then realizes it hurts. Eli is looking for a second chance to have a happy life running and playing like his pug pals! We are very close to having enough money for his surgery. Please consider donating to this special boy.You can make a contribution through to homewardboundpugs@cox.net or contact Gail Tucker |
Doggone Good News!

Maxine
Maxine has had her cataract surgery and it was successful! She now has 90% of her sight in her remaining eye. Now this beautiful puppy mill survivor can run and play with the rest of her pug friends.
Thanks to all who donated for her surgery. We couldn't do it without your help!

Rainbow Bridge
Don Vito
Our sweet Don Vito crossed the bridge February 3rd after a long battle with liver disease. He will be missed by his mommies Gail and Mary and by dozens of friends who have seen him through his struggles and triumphs. He was a strong little boy who held out much longer than anyone thought. His sweet personality touched so many. Fly free DV. We will miss your gentle soul.

I thought about leaving this space blank in order to embarrass and shame Gail for not submitting her letter on time. After some careful thought and a very realistic fear of what she would do to me, I decided to write it for her.
"People, I do not have time for this #%*@ article! I am up to my eyeballs in pugs. It is so overwhelming I am afraid I will pass out from exhaustion and someone will find me days later lying face down in a pile of pug poop, half eaten by hungry pugs! I desperately need people to help foster pugs. It does not have to be for a long time, even a week or two would be enough. Please, if you would open your home and your heart to a homeless pug you will learn how rewarding it is to help those in need.
Email me and I will send you a foster application.
In closing, I would like to thank everyone for being such faithful supporters. Times have been tough but you have been there for us every step of the way. I would write more but I have to feed 17 pugs before they start gnawing on my legs!
