 Notes From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Enrollment Update

Our 2012-13 school year is off to a great start! Most classes are full with wait lists, but we still have a couple of openings in grades 3 & 4 and one opening in grade 6.  Please spread the word to your family and friends.  We would like to fill these openings early in the school year as teachers are building classroom communities and settng expectations.

Thank you for sharing your children with us.  We are looking forward to an outstanding year.

 Pick-Up and Drop Off Update

Thank you for your cooperation with our pick up and drop off lane efforts. Drop off in the morning is going smoothly, and the pick-up procedure is slowly improving. We timed the line for 3 days in a row we had the entire line finished by 4:12 so we know it is working.

Here are some tips that will help with the flow:

1-Use the ACE expectations as set a good example for your child. Be accountable and make a plan with your child for pick-up. Be considerate of the volunteers (this is not a fun job). Volunteer to assist the PTO in the future to help with the double parking out front. If most families use the pick-up lane, we can avoid the double parking in the front. Make a generous donation to our upcoming Capital Campaign so we can move to a more desirable location in the future. Please don't complain about the procedure unless you have a better suggestion. Say thank you to the parent volunteer parents who are assisting and addressing the problem.

2-Discuss the pick-up procedure with your child. Do they know who is picking up? Do they understand the importance of going straight to the pick-up lane? If you are asked to circle around because your child is slow to arrive at the pick-up lane, please be considerate and do so. If you have older children, you might want to consider arriving at 4:10 for pick up rather that right a 4:00. Some families have already made this plan-THANKS!

3-Pull all the way forward as far as you are able before loading your carpool.

4-Load from the right side of the car in order to avoid students walking into the bypass lane.

5-As soon as you have your carpool loaded, pull out into the bypass lane to exit to Roosevelt. This makes space for those waiting in line behind you.

6-We do not have permission to park at the church in the spaces nearest their building (only those spaces adjacent to our fence line). We do have an agreement for the drive through lane in the morning and afternoon. Please do not park in the spaces we use for the drive lanes between 3:15 and 4:15 PM or 7:30 and 8:15 AM. However, if you are volunteering for just a short time that will not interfere with our traffic procedures, please feel free to park in the spaces adjacent to our fence line only between the hours of 8:15 and 3:15 IF you are not blocking access to the church food pantry (small white shed).

Back to School for Parents

Please join us for Back to School Night for Parents on Tuesday, September 11. Parents will gather on the playground at 6 pm for a short program, announcements and introductions. Two sessions for each class will be held in order accommodate parents with multiple children: Session 1: 6:30-7:00 PM. Session 2: 7:00-7:30 PM. If your child is part of the opening program, child care supervision will be provided on the playground during both sessions. Your child's teacher will let you know if they are part of the opening program.  Classroom space is limited and parents are encouraged to attend without children and younger siblings.

Board Recruitment

TVCS Board will soon be recruiting for two open board positions. In order to have a strong board with varied expertise, our board recruits for new positions based on the needed skill sets. We are currently seeking candidates with a strong background in grant writing and reporting and educational policy. Often our own parent population will have skills in the needed areas or they will know someone outside of our community to recommend. Other educational institutions, such as universities, and non-profits are good places to begin a search. If you know of someone who has the above skills, is passionate about education and making a difference for children, please submit their name and contact information to: jani@thevillagecharterschool.org for consideration.

Substitutes Needed

While it is rare for our Village teachers to be absent from the classroom, we do need to be prepared for the possibility. If you, or someone you know, is interested in substitute teaching at TVCS please visit the school website for more information about how to apply.

Lunches & Snacks

TVCS students pack a healthy snack and lunch for each school day. We have a long school day and it's important for children to have the proper fuel for the day. Involve your child in making good choices for lunches and snacks. See our Student Handbook on our website for some healthy snack suggestions.

Dress Code

Thank You!  The dress code compliance has been excellent!  We will soon have a dress down day:  Thursday, September 27.  Students are invited to wear jeans and their favorite sports t-shirt or jersey.  Please make sure text on shirts is school appropriate.  if your child chooses not to participate in the optional dress down sports day, please have them wear their regular school uniform.
