 Principal Notes

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for attending our evening math night for parents. We had a great turnout. Parents had an opportunity to engage in some of the same kinds of math experiences as students and get an overview of the state's direction for math instruction. We are looking forward to making Math Night an annual tradition that could include the whole family in future years. Parents asked great questions and the dialogue was valuable. As promised, I have a few resources to share. The first is a website Dr. Brendefur referred to, the Developing Mathematical Thinking Project at BSU. Click on the link below and then the tab to the left for Parents. There you will find the newsletters for Subtraction, Addition, Multiplication and an article about the kinds of questions to ask your child when helping with math assignments at home. As we work toward installing Apangea for the older grades and more resources are available, we will continue to share with parents.

Valentine's Day/Friendship Celebrations on

Tuesday, February 14

The PTO and Room Parents are working out the details for our friendship week celebrations. Teachers will email or send home a hard copy of an updated class list for students who would like to distribute valentines. Celebrations may include a friendship craft of some kind and a small snack may be served. General guidelines are to keep it small and preferably not something sweet because candy is often exchanged along with valentines. Additionally, to carry through the friendship theme, a Scavenger Hunt idea was finalized last week at the PTO meeting. It includes 5 optional activities:
1- Meet someone new.
2- Perform a random act of kindness.
3- Write a thank you note to someone.
4- Perform an act of service.
5- Smile at someone you don't know.
The Scavenger Hunt will use the honor-system. Students sign off when they've done something with a description of it. They have all week to complete it. Then on Thursday they may turn it in at a PTO table at lunch or after school for a small prize (details are being finalized for this and will be shared with students and teachers soon).

Re-commitment Forms Due

Re-commitment forms were mailed out to families in January.  This form tells us that you are planning to return to The Village Charter School in the fall. It is also used to count the number of siblings that will be enrolling for Kindergarten.  This form is due to the front office by February 24th.  According to our enrollment policy, if we do not receive a form back from you by the deadline, we will assume that you do NOT wish to enroll for the 2012-2013 school year and we will fill those spots from our waiting list. Please remember to log onto our website at thevillagecharterschool.org  to register any siblings that you may have  for the lottery.

Traffic & Parking Concerns

The Morris Hill Neighborhood group has requested our assistance with the following observed traffic issues:

  • Cars parked on Roosevelt too close to Bethel and Morris Hill, impairing visibility so that you cannot see when trying to make a left or right hand turn from Bethel or Morris Hill onto Roosevelt
  • Cars parked on Bethel very close to Roosevelt on both sides, making a very narrow traffic corridor with impaired visibility when turning onto Bethel off of Roosevelt.  An added complication is kids and parents are running to and from the school and these cars, without checking for traffic.
  • Cars abruptly leaving when parked along Roosevelt without the use of a turn signal; on several occasions there are cars parked parallel to Roosevelt on the school side and they will veer into Roosevelt with apparently no regard for existing traffic
  • Pedestrians, both kids and adults, not using the crosswalk, running across Bethel, Roosevelt and Morris Hill in the morning and when school lets out.

We want our students to be safe every day and we want to have a good relationship with our neighbors as well. The neighborhood group may request police patrols to help address the illegal parking issues and we want to give parents a heads up about this first so that parents are aware and can avoid a costly ticket. I would also like to request your cooperation with our pick up lane. Have a plan with your children. Make sure children know they are to come straight to the gate area for pick up after school. If your child is not ready, please circle around again and let other parents move forward in the lane. Thank you so much for your attention to this matter. We appreciate parents who are great models for our students, think about safety and are considerate of others.

We are looking for parent volunteers to help supervise the crosswalk area before and after school. If you are interested in helping, please email PTO@thevillagecharterschool.org

to let Mrs. Stull know your availability. Thank You!
