Something New...
TVCS is one of a select group of schools in Idaho that is part of Project Unify. Project Unify is a Special Olympics program that encourages inclusion and unity within and outside of the schools. Our first Project Unify event is an assembly that each class will attend where they will learn about inclusion vs. exclusion and discrimination, Project Unify, and the R-word campaign- "Spread the Word to End the Word."

Our school's own R-word campaign will happen in March and we will be asking students, faculty, staff, and parents to commit and pledge not to use the word 'retard' or any of it's variations. More information will be coming about this very important campaign to spread Respect.

As a Project Unify school, we have five students who are a part of a Youth Advisory Council. This council is a statewide group of students who are engineering support for the Special Olympics with programs like Fans in the Stands, an Olympic village for athletes, the Penguin Plunge, and inclusive Project Unify Activities.

As a Project Unify school, we have access to $1000 in grant money to make a difference in our school.

We are honored to have been invited and excited to truly become a unified school!

Elective
Program Update

Hello Village Parents!

Our Second Elective Session is in full swing and we've already heard some great feedback about the courses being offered.  We hope your kids are finding electives a great way to end their school week and something they look forward to on Thursdays!

As we have mentioned in the past, we are always in need of new or gently used donations to help support this amazing volunteer run program.  Below is a link where you can sign up online to donate supplies for upcoming elective classes.  Please take a moment and browse through this list to see if there may be something you have that has been collecting dust or if you find it in your heart and pocketbook to purchase.  There are different quantities for each item.  Even if you can donate an apron or garden trowel, we would be most appreciative!

Student Council News

Student Council is working with the PTO in maintaining the school Giving Tree.  The tree is located on the wall next to the stairway, just around the corner from the front office. In the next week or so, a set of fresh tags that list books, supplies, and other  new or gently used items our teachers have on their classroom wish-lists will be placed on the tree. Families who would like to contribute an item to their child's classroom are encouraged to take a tag and fill a wish!

The Student Council is looking forward to welcoming potential new families to TVCS. Student volunteers will act as tour guides on the evenings of February 6 and 28, when our school holds Prospective Parent Information Events.

A new student club has been approved by the Student Council.  Fifth grade student Mackenzie Putman submitted a proposal for the Appreciation Club, which she hopes will give students who enjoy helping out around the school opportunities to provide service and have fun.  The club is open to any students who would like to spend some of their recess time assisting teachers with projects, helping with school clean up, or taking part in other activities that show their appreciation for our school. Thanks for the great leadership idea Mackenzie!

Chicken Pox

We have heard from parents that it seems as if there are a high number of chicken pox cases occurring at our school that seem to be of epidemic proportions.  Actually, they are not.  The difference is that many schools only alert families who have students in the effected classroom and some schools choose not to publicize chicken pox cases at all.  Because of this, even though chicken pox cases do exist in other schools, the community is largely unaware of them.

At TVCS we have chosen to alert our community as it seems like the right thing to do.  We will continue to alert our families of any communicable illness including lice, chicken pox, etc.  If you would rather not be notified of  health concerns, please send an email to info@thevillagecharterschool.org and we will remove your email address from the health notification list.

Future City Project

Our 6th Graders have been busily working on their Future City Project for a big competition this past weekend.

The Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, design, and build cities of the future. The competition is used to increase students awareness in global-issues and engineering solutions to lead the students through the engineering design process in an effort to solve real-world issues.

Our 6th grade students worked as a team with their teacher and an engineer mentor to plan computer-based cities, research and write an essay on alternative energy sources; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; and presented their ideas before judges at the competition this past Saturday. Their future city, "Poseidon", took home the "Best Project Teamwork Design" award and the kids had a blast presenting their project they have been working effortlessly on since October. Miss Olivetti, our 6th Grade teacher, had this to say about the project "It was a great experience, and we are already looking forward to next year's competition. Hopefully we have a classroom full of future engineers in the making!"  Way to go 6th Graders and a big Thank you to Miss Olivetti and Doc. Fisher for their extra time, guidance, resourcefulness and perseverance on this project!

Absences

Please be conscientious of your student's absences from school. With our 4 day school week, when your student is absent, they miss A LOT of work and can get behind quickly. Additionally, our funding from the state is largely depended upon attendance. Since budgets are tight and we are committed to finding a permanent facility in the next few years, we rely on every dollar!  We
understand that students get sick but where possible, please send your students to school and schedule vacations and appointments around our school schedule.

Thank You!!
