About Attendance

Dear Parents,

Each student's daily attendance is essential to his or her individual success and the overall success at The Village Charter School. Attendance and punctuality are necessary, and students should plan on attending school every day that classes are scheduled. Our funding is largely determined by our average daily attendance data. We have structured our school calendar to allow for adequate vacation breaks throughout the year. We request that you do not use school days to extend vacations or make routine medical or dental appointments. Please plan these appointments on Friday or after 4 pm. We greatly appreciate this consideration.

Sincerely,

Dr. Teresa England

 Spots Still Available...

3 grade artDid you know that we still have a few spots available in several classes?  We had students who registered but didn't end up coming last week which has created some vacancies.

If you know of anyone who is considering enrollment in K, 2, 3, 5, 7/8 grades, please tell them to call the school at 336-2000.  Thank You for helping to spread the word!

The First Week

The first week back to school went well and students and teachers spent much of the time getting to know one another. The slow summer days are over and bed times and wake up times need to be adjusted. For many students the 8-4 day will be a big adjustment. Please make sure your child has a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast each morning before school.

Be sure to talk with your children about their experience at school. Often the best conversations start with a good question. Instead of "What did you do today?" Or "What did you learn?" try asking:

"What was the best activity today?" buddies

"Who made the funniest comment?"

"What did you do after lunch?"

"Who brought the best snack today?"

"How do you know what the rules are at school?"

"What does ACE mean?"

"Tell me what you know about the 7 Habits."

"What are you writing about at school?"

"Have you started reading a good book yet?"

We look forward to meeting parents and talking with you about our school program on our upcoming Back to School night on Sept. 8. This event is currently being planned. Please check back in to the website for an update about the timing and structure of the event.

SAFETY

We have installed an additional gate on the south side of the building for safety. Keeping in mind that student safety is paramount; we have elected to lock the side gates during school hours. This allows us to be more comfortable leaving the side doors unlocked for students to enter the building at recess time to get drinks and use the restrooms. Please use the main entrance when coming early to pick up a student and check in at the office to sign out. Kindergarten parents will still meet students at the bike rack area after class. Miss Coles will unlock the gate for parents to enter and exit at the K am pick up and K pm drop off. The north gate will be unlocked for drop off and pick up each day as well. Please feel free to enter the front door of the building if you would like to meet your child at the classroom door. The side gate and fence at the car drop off lane will soon be replaced. We are expecting the delivery of one additional portable building before we close the fence. The 2nd portable will not be a divided space. Instead, it will be left open to provide a room for indoor PE classes during poor weather, for elective activities on Thursday afternoon and various other events. Additionally, we want to assure parents that we have adequate playground supervision during drop off, pick up and recess times. In order for students to better see the playground supervisors, staff will be wearing orange vests starting this week.

PTO

Are you interested in being a part of The Village Charter School's Parent Teacher Organization, aka the PTO?  If so, join us for a meeting Tuesday August 30 at 7:00 PM at the school.  To join the PTO there is a $5 suggested donation.

We hope you will come to be a part of a great group of parents who are excited to be involved.

NUTS

We asked families not to pack nuts the first week of school so we would have time to evaluate the seriousness of the nut allergies that our students have. At this time, it looks like the nut allergies that we do have are all associated with ingestion of nuts, and not anything that is airborne. We would like to relax the limit on nuts, but want to assure parents that we are aware of which students do have allergies and we will provide a "nut free" table for those students during lunch and snack times. Students with allergies should be advised by parents not to eat anything from other students' lunches or snacks.

Thank you again and sorry for the inconvenience!

Middle School Accomodations

The biggest glitch we have had this past week has been with our middle school portable that is waiting for its occupancy permit.  It seems as though this permit process may be a few weeks, so in the meantime we have made arrangements with our neighbors at the Synagogue (just across the street behind the park) to let us use thier social hall for our classes until we have our permits.  The Synagogue provides a large space with tables, chairs, a/c and restrooms.  Students will continue to meet at our school site each morning, will eat lunch at our building and will be at our school site for pick up at the end of the day.  If you have a 6th, 7th or 8th grader and need to pick them up early from school, please check in with our office and we will direct you to the best place for pick up.  If you have questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact us at 336-2000.

BOXTOPS & LABELS

Please save your Boxtops for Education and your Cambell's soup labels - as we will be collecting them soon.

THANKS!!

What to Expect

The Principal, teachers, staff, founders and and board members are all thrilled to be part of establishing The Village Charter School.  We are excited about all TVCS has to offer the community and feel that our school's approach is unique and of value in the Treasure Valley.  Each of us is dedicated to the success of our students academically, as well as personally and put them as our highest priority.

We do feel that we need to be up front however, in letting our stakeholders (parents) know that while we are dedicated to this school and its success, we are all new at working together, implementing programs that are custom created for this school, and the teachers are learning curriculum that is new and unfamiliar to them.  There are programs that will need time, experience and further development.  We want to ask that you please be patient with us.  There are bound to be bumps in the road this first year, in fact, it may take a couple of years for our staff to gel and get in a groove with the new culture, curriculum, students, parents, and routines.  Believe it or not, none of us have EVER started a school before!  This is all new territory and as such, please be understanding and patient as we will be doing our best to work through the kinks that are bound to arise.   We truly want to do what is best for our students and their families and will try to make this first year as smooth as possible.

Thank You!
