TeenForce Report

December 15,  2011

Greetings!

We are winding down a wonderful year at TeenForce and looking ahead to 2012. We have employed over 100 youth this year and they have earned over $140,000 while learning valuable skills and contributing to our community.

We appreciate the support provided by all of you...parents, employers, teachers, students, donors, trainers, volunteers and interested supporters. Since inception, our teens have logged over 20,000 paid work hours!

We would like to use this year-end newsletter to appeal to you to help us directly, either through a donation, employment referral, training referral or just by sharing this newsletter with your Facebook friends. Details on each of these ideas are below.

Happy Holidays and best wishes for the New Year.

Elly, Nancy and John

Front row seats at the Los Gatos Christmas Parade!

Special thanks to Chicago Steak and Fish for running a fundraiser to benefit TeenForce as part of the Los Gatos Christmas Parade. With the help of super volunteer, Michael Silva, the restaurant sold reserved, front row seats to the parade, with proceeds going to TeenForce. Besides a great view of the parade, folks received a terrific brunch as part of the package. If you are looking for a spot to celebrate some holiday cheer, please put Chicago Steak and Fish on your list!

Have We Been Helpful?  Please Spread the Word
If you feel like TeenForce has been helpful to local youth, there are a few things you can do to help us grow. Please consider one or all...
  • Consider a donation to TeenForce. We cover almost half of our expenses with the income we generate from job placements. We are trying to increase this to 100%, but, until then, we rely on foundations and local donors for the rest.
  • Donations of $25 to $100 are extremely helpful in offsetting our modest operating expenses. One of our favorite costs to incur is the "work readiness orientation" that we offer to all new hires. This 2.5 hour training course helps get them off on the right foot in their new job assignment. A $50 donation offsets our costs related to this program. If you can help, please follow this link, or simply mail a check to TeenForce at 101 Church Street, Suite 19, Los Gatos 95030.
  • Go to www.Guidestar.org and write up a short review about your experience with TeenForce. You can offer your impressions of our program, or perhaps discuss the growth you have seen in your teen or a teen who has worked with you.
  • Go to our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/teenforce and make a similar post.
  • Like us on Facebook. We can always use more friends!
  • "Share" this newsletter on Facebook by clicking the Facebook button at the top. Really, it is just a click. (We ask this every month, and we average less than one "share" a month. We are getting a complex.)
Skills Training is Gathering Momentum

We aren't able to find a job for every student that we meet, and not all students are ready to work. However, we still want to offer services to youth waiting for their chance at a paid job. We offer two types of training to these youth: Soft skills and hard skills. The soft skills training is focused on resume writing, interviewing skills and job search skills.

The hard skills training is designed to expose youth to specific industries and tasks that will help them build skills and confidence. This is useful when we place them in a job, or when they are searching for a job on their own. Becky McGraw recently joined our team as a volunteer and is helping us organize hard skill training sessions and identify training partners. So far, we have these on the calendar for January:

  • Grocery skills - Trader Joe's will host a group of students and introduce them to various jobs such as bagging, stocking and pricing.
  • Social Media Marketing Skills - Karmen Reed of KickOff Topic: Social Media Marketing Solutions will offer 8 hours of training to six youth. They will learn how to help businesses utilize a variety of social media tools such as Facebook, newsletters, blogs and search engine optimization to increase sales and traffic. www.kickofftopic.com

Becky is working hard to identify training partners who can help teach restaurant skills and retail skills. If you can help in these areas, or have other ideas, please give us a call.

About Us

TeenForce is a self-sustaining non-profit organization that helps teens (ages 13 - 20) gain work experience.  We provide work readiness training, skills development and job placement services.  Our staffing agency model makes it convenient and cost-effective for employers to hire teens and generates revenue to support our activities.

Teens in our program gain confidence and skills, while improving adult/teen relationships.  Teens become healthy, caring and responsible young adults who have important roles in the community.

We are located at 101 Church Street, Suite 19 in Los Gatos. We are open Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM.
