Greetings!
|
| | Workforce Development Luncheon at The Terraces of Los Gatos |
September was a very exciting and rewarding month at TeenForce. We held our first Community Workforce Development Luncheon and were humbled by the support and enthusiasm of the attendees. The event was highlighted by a presentation from one of our teen workers about the value she has gained from her work experience. You can read more about it in this article from the Los Gatos Weekly. We used the event to update the community on our progress and goals, with a particular emphasis on the success of our foster youth pilot program. You can view the presention here.
The following week, we focused on our successful summer internship program when we presented at the Career Technical Education conference. Read below for more on the great work being done to help our youth get career ready.

Client Profile: Affordable Treasures
 | | TeenForce employees at Affordable Treasures for the Halloween Season! |
Another Milestone! We are very proud that one of our first clients, Affordable Treasures, has selected us to help them with their very busy Halloween season for the second year. This is testimony to the value we can provide and a great example of how local businesses can use our services to meet unique business needs. Last year, we provided four teens for the season and this year we are providing six. It sounds like Los Gatans are gearing up for another exciting night on Tait Avenue!
We hope that this example of seasonal workforce support will prompt other retailers to consider us for the upcoming holiday season. Please spread the word that we are a cost-effective and convenient way to manage extra activities like stocking, wrapping, shipping and decorating. |

Career Technical Education
Regular readers are well aware that we are big fans of the work that is done by Career Technical Education leaders throughout the county. We had two great CTE experiences in September. The first was a wonderful tour of the Central County Occupational Center (CCOC) campus in San Jose. This facility hosts 1600 students from 37 county high schools for three hours each day. They attend year-long courses in career classes such as forensics, law enforcement, auto mechanics, culinary, dentistry, engineering, video production and finance. If you are interested in how our education system is supporting career education, you owe it to yourself to learn about and support CCOC.

In late September we attended the annual CTE conference and were fortunate to be able to make a presentation on our summer internship program. Our first summer was a big success as we offered 16 internships and several of them have continued beyond the summer as our students are doing work online. A complete copy of all the presentations from the conference (including ours) can be found on the CTE website.

Financial News and Supporters
As you know, our non-profit jobs program is unique as it not only helps youth gain experience, but it also seeks to become self-sustaining through the job placement revenue that we earn. This market-based approach recognizes the value of our teen workforce and will succeed because our workers are productive, enthusiastic and reliable.
We are very pleased to report that we are making nice progress towards our objective after just 18 months. In the quarter ended September 30, we billed over 6000 teen work hours (17% foster youth program, 35% internships and 48% part-time jobs), and the earned income covered 59% of our operating expenses. This is a very exciting result and gives us visibility to eventually being fully self-supporting.
As we continue our development we are still reliant upon and very appreciative of community and foundation support. Over the past month, we have received grants from The Waitte Foundation and from Best Buy that will be very helpful in supporting our mission. We also received a number of individual contributions at our luncheon. If you would like to support our efforts with a contribution, please visit the donation section of our website. Thank you! |

About Us
TeenForce is a self-sustaining non-profit organization that helps teens (ages 13 - 20) gain work experience. We provide work readiness training, skills development and job placement services. Our staffing agency model makes it convenient and cost-effective for employers to hire teens and generates revenue to support our activities.
Teens in our program gain confidence and skills, while improving adult/teen relationships. Teens become healthy, caring and responsible young adults who have important roles in the community.
We are located at 101 Church Street, Suite 19 in Los Gatos. We are open Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM.
