| TeenForce Report | December 9, 2010 |
Greetings!
Welcome to the ninth TeenForce Report of 2010! This issue highlights a client who has gone above and beyond to support teens in our community. We also provide some updates on our activity at TeenForce and point out our biggest challenge: We have more teens than we have jobs.
If you can help, it would be much appreciated. Thanks for your continued support.
-John Hogan

Client Profile - We've Got Your Back We couldn't be more proud to have We've Got Your Back as one our original clients. They offer fitness, ergonomic and comfort productsnumber of products to help you achieve and maintain a healthy body and back. These products are available in their beautiful downtown Los Gatos retail store and online. Owner Rita Marcojohn and WGYB have understood and embraced the concept behind TeenForce and have even pushed it forward.
Recognizing the needs and talents of local teens, they hired Michelle and had her focus on building the online marketing presence of WGYB, primarily focusing on social media marketing. Rita and Michelle have worked together to their mutual growth and benefit. You can see much of their handiwork reflected in the WGYB blog, web site, and Facebook page. If your business could benefit from social media marketing, let us know. We have teens who can help!
The WGYB team took their support of Los Gatos youth a step further last week by sponsoring a float in the Los Gatos Christmas Parade. This float promoted our great teen center "A Place for Teens" (aka The Venue) and was built by local teens with the help of Rory Fakuda who designed and guided the effort. Check out this great video to see the float building and some parade action.

Happenings at TeenForce Things have been busy around the office as we have added four new part-time members to our team to help support our efforts to find jobs for local teens. Jackson is a high school senior and will be our first outside sales representative. Braden is also a senior and is learning our accounting, payroll and HR activities. Ann Marie, a recent LGHS grad, and Brandy, a junior, are staffing specialists who focus on supporting teens and interacting with our clients.
And, Luke, our marketing specialist has just completed an overhaul of our web site. We have improved and simplified the navigation. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Teen Labor in the News We aren't sure that our teens would agree, but some "experts" believe that reducing the minimum wage would help more teens find jobs. The California minimum wage of $8.00 is ten percent higher than the Federal level of $7.25. Researchers say that this gap can reduce the number of jobs for teens by 11%. Read more here.
Teens aren't sure about this whole FICA tax thing. They understand that they are paying towards the social security fund, but typically think they are paying towards their own personal retirement account. However, the current math indicates that the fund will be depleted before they are old enough to collect. Now it looks like Congress is about to pass a bill reducing the FICA tax by $2 per $100 in wages for 2011. This might buy another (half of a) latte, but it might also exacerbate the problem.

Help Us Grow! We are grateful for the help of our clients and supporters in the launching of this new venture. So far, we have helped 45 teens find jobs and paid them for over 4400 hours. But, last week, we interviewed 8 new teens, bringing the total in our "jobseeker pipeline" to 125. Some of these are away at college right now, but we have about 50 teens who are ready and anxious to work. If you can offer an opportunity, please give us a call and find out how efficient and cost-effective it can be to hire through TeenForce.
If you can't help us by offering a job, please consider a donation. It is tax-deductible and the funds will go towards helping our marketing efforts and training teens in workplace etiquette and safety. Our teens are well-prepared when they arrive in the workplace.

About Us
A teen for every job and a job for every teen!
TeenForce is a non-profit organization developing Los Gatos and Monte Sereno youth through skills training and on-the-job work experience.
We accomplish our mission by operating a temporary employment agency exclusively for teenagers. This model makes it very convenient for local businesses and residents to hire pre-screened and eager teens for temporary and part-time assignments. We handle all the paperwork, tax filings, and insurance. All that you need to do is provide the opportunity!
We are located at 101 Church Street, Suite 19 in Los Gatos. We are open Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM. |
