| TeenForce Report | October 25, 2010 |
Greetings!
Thank you for your continued support of TeenForce. We hope that you find our newsletters informative and that you pass them along to your friends and business associates. There is a "forward" link at the very bottom of the newsletter that will make this easy. This issue recaps our recent Internship Roll-Out Event and also touches on some of the growth challenges we are experiencing. We also invite you to support a candle light vigil that calls attention to the problem of drug use by youth in our community. We believe that a positive experience with a part-time job can be a very strong influence in the life of a young person, providing a source of self-esteem and pride. Thanks for your help in supporting our mission. -John Hogan p.s. - Don't forget to stop by Affordable Treasures for your Halloween supplies!

Our goal is to become a self-sustaining non-profit through the job placement activities that we conduct. At this time, however, we would appreciate funding support until we reach required volumes. Just $25 covers our cost for a teen to participate in our extensive (paid) 2.5 hour orientation program, which includes a review of labor laws, workplace etiquette and detailed training on workplace safety and sexual harassment. If you would like to help TeenForce continue our service to the community, please visit our Donation page on the TeenForce website. Thank you!

Summer Internship Informational Event Recap
Volunteer Sales Force Coming Together
We held a successful meeting on October 7 where we introduced our 2011 Summer Internship Program to 18 interested parents and community members. You can view a copy of the presentation here. The goal of the program is to offer 30 robust, paid internships during the summer of 2011. We feel these work assignments will help students "test their passion" for a particular career. They can also help students choose a college or choose a major. We are asking for parents and community members to support us by offering to help us find employers and internships. We have the tools to explain the program and a kit that you can send to prospective employers. Please contact us to find out how you can help. |

Rally For Aaron, Rally For Addiction RFA raises drug addiction and drug overdose awareness When local Los Gatos High School graduates Melissa Barnes and Jessica Snee were devastated by the tragic death of their close friend and former classmate Aaron Selchow, they decided to start educating the community about drug abuse awareness.
Selchow, another LGHS graduate, was an energetic 17-year-old who enjoyed skateboarding, hockey, and cooking but turned to drugs after his best friend died in a car accident during his senior year. Over the next three years, Aaron fell deeper into depression and addiction and the role drugs played in his life continued to grow.
At age 20, Aaron passed away in July from a methadone overdose and his friends struggled to fill the void he left behind. However, friends Barnes and Snee are now steadfast on taking down drug addiction in our community by promoting awareness and working to start a Narcotics Overdose Prevention & Education (NOPE) chapter in Santa Clara County. They started an organization called Rally For Addiction (RFA) and created a website to inform people about Aaron and the dangers of drug abuse.
In order to start the NOPE chapter, RFA is selling limited edition "In Memory of Aaron" skateboards designed by the famous Santa Cruz board artist Jimbo Phillips. They are also accepting donations.
On Thursday, October 28th, RFA is holding a candle light vigil at Oak Meadow Park in Los Gatos at 7 PM to remember all who have lost their lives to drugs. Partnering with NOPE, this memorial service is a touching way to reflect and honor those who lost the battle with drug addiction.

Current Initiatives and Challenges
In our last couple of newsletters, we have been pleased to tell you about record activity levels in terms of teens working and hours billed. While we are pleased with our progress, we want to take a few minutes to mention areas where we need help or are seeking to improve:
- Over 50% of our placements are coming from two employers. We definitely need to expand our client base and would encourage you to contact us with any business or home-based job openings. We need help spreading our message to businesses and residents throughout town. Please use Facebook, email or other means to forward this newsletter and recommend our services.
- While 90% of our placements have been a smashing success, we have had a few instances where teens have under-performed, primarily in the area of timeliness and attendance. We want everyone to know that our teens are coached on the critical nature of reliability and integrity. Our motto is to Do What You Say You Will Do (DWYSYWD). We realize that one failure reflects badly on the entire TeenForce team and are working hard to make sure that we are all accountable to each other and our clients.
- In addition to seeking new job opportunities for teens, we are working to develop "community training partners." These organizations will offer opportunities to help teens become "job ready" through structured training in areas such as food safety, hospitality, health care and office equipment. If you would like more information, please call Ryan Johnson at 408-827-3078 ext 2.

About Us
A teen for every job and a job for every teen!
TeenForce is a non-profit organization developing Los Gatos and Monte Sereno youth through skills training and on-the-job work experience.
We accomplish our mission by operating a temporary employment agency exclusively for teenagers. This model makes it very convenient for local businesses and residents to hire pre-screened and eager teens for temporary and part-time assignments. We handle all the paperwork, tax filings, and insurance. All that you need to do is provide the opportunity!
We are located at 101 Church Street, Suite 19 in Los Gatos. We are open Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM. |
