GOVERNOR'S CORNER |
HISTORY IN THE MAKING ~ A TRIBUTE TO 9/11
Marking the first monument of its kind outside of New York, the Pentagon, and crash landing site in Shankesville, Pennsylvania, community leaders, pilots, flight attendants, military personnel, multiple service groups, friends, and family members of the victims and survivors of that fateful day will gather to dedicate New York drive, in Pasadena, as a memorial to those lost on 9/11/2001.
Active and retired members of the armed forces, law enforcement, pilots, and flight attendants are urged to show up in full uniform. There are rumors that the team coordinating this event is working hard to get F-18s to fly a missing man formation overhead.
District 5300 encourages Rotarians to attend the event. For details about the monument and the memorial visit: www.pasadena911memorial.org. |

PR NEWS FROM RI |
The RI Board has taken the initiative to increase budgetary support of the RI Strategic Plan, specifically the goal of enhancing the public image and public awareness of Rotary. Accordingly, the Board designated the use of $9.9 million from the General Surplus Fund over a three-year period to support additional district public relations grants, significant branding research and initiatives, social networking initiatives, and communications campaigns. To find out how this news can benefit your club or how to apply for a PR grant, visit: www.rotary.org. |
IDEAS FOR MEMBERSHIP |
When it comes to recruiting club members, there are almost as many ideas as there are Rotarians, which is not surprising considering Rotary's diversity. A few ideas include:
- Invite friends, colleagues, or neighbors to participate in club projects.
- Give potential members a "Start with Rotary" postcard or wallet card.
- Talk with potential members about Rotary's humanitarian work, including programs like PolioPlus. Mention the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's involvement.
- Invite professional women in the community to club meetings. Initiate projects that focus on women's issues, and invite prominent women in the community to participate, speak, or lead.

JOB CREATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS NEW RI AREA OF FOCUS |
To the sixth area of Rotary focus - Economic & Community Development - has been added Income Generation & Savings, and Job Creation & Entrepreneurship. During PDG Roger Schulte's year, 2010-2011, the first High School Business Plan Competition, in District 5300, took place. In 2012, the District is planning to initiate a middle school competition.
All clubs are encouraged to start business plan classes in local schools during the 2011-12 school year. Let's keep our district in the forefront of Job Creation & Entrepreneurship, locally and globally.
