Rotary District 5300
Presidents Preview Session 8
Goal Setting

sylvia whitlock

Welcome to week 8 of the President Elect Excellence Preview!

We are at our first break in the road to your Presidency. You have negotiated it well and I hope the methods you developed as you did that will help you to negotiate PrePETS, PETS, and your presidential year. This training also helps to prepare you to assume some Leadership positions in District 5300. You will be the most informed presidents in our history. You will know what to ask when you get to PETS. You will know how to attend to Membership (IGNITE), Foundation and all it means and you will be Presidents when the Future Vision Program is realized. You now have the foundation - the building blocks on which all this will stand. I applaud you for finding the time in your already busy days to work this program. I have enjoyed talking back with you and hope you will always see me as the person ready to assist you in the realization of YOUR goals. The Assistant Governors and I are here to serve you above ourselves and to ensure the continuity of this organization. I look forward to seeing all of you, in person, very soon!

Yours in Rotary,

Sylvia Whitlock

District Governor Elect

October 17, 2011 Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Work with club leaders and members to develop or update the club's strategic plan
  • Use the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs to work with club members to establish club goals for the coming year.
Strategies for achieving goals

The following strategies can help clubs achieve their goals:

  • Establish a timeline.
  • Outline the specific steps needed to achieve the goal.
  • Consider the resources and tools available.
  • Determine who is responsible for implementing each step.
  • Identify the criteria for measuring the club's progress.
  • Monitor the progress toward the goal.
  • Evaluate the success of previous goals and current action plans, making modifications as necessary.
Strategic Planning

Strategic planning helps clubs achieve their vision through long-range and annual goals.  The following are steps to consider when developing a strategic plan:

  • Describe the club's current state, including its strengths and weaknesses.
  • Draft a one-sentence vision statement describing the ideal state of the club in five years.
  • Brainstorm five-year goals that will help the club achieve the vision.
  • Allocate sufficient resources for the plan's implementation.
  • Review the plan annually, and revise as needed.

 A strategic plan

  • Gives all club members the opportunity to be involved in planning the future of the club
  • Ensures consistency and continuity among those who carry out the goals
  • Focuses on significant issues and challenges facing the club
  • Promotes teamwork and commitment to strategic issues
