DISTRICT LEADERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENTS

REDISTRICTING

Having received no objections to the redistricting of D5190, D5260, D5280, and D5300 into three districts, RI Board of Directors passed the Motion with an effective date of July 1, 2012.

What does this mean for our district?  Basically in the 2012-13 Rotary year, when Dr. Sylvia Whitlock is governor, our district will pick up 6 clubs from the Antelope Valley area.  Dr. Whitlock and DG Doug Fowler have been in touch with Tom Hardy, the governor of District 5260 to effect a smooth transition.

For questions please contact:  PDG Roger Schulte.

 A LASTING LEGACY

A most lasting legacy a Rotary club can leave is the starting of a new club. As the CA Extension Resource Chair this year, I encourage groups of Rotarians in Rotary Clubs to seriously consider this as a goal for the 2011-12 year.

I encourage presidents to contact me, my committee and I will be there to guide you through the process. My only advice: start now, start with a plan, and start with two or three committed Rotarians who will see the process through.

NewGen YOUTH NEED JOBS - LET'S HELP

According to the media, NewGen youth in Greece, Egypt, and Libya uprise against their governments because they have no JOBS.  As Rotarians, you can make a difference.

Rotarians are business-savvy and can help by working with your local schools to create Entrepreneurial Literacy and How to Write Business Plan Programs in our schools.  This allows us to 'share forward' what our vocations have taught us.  It's really that easy.

San Marino H.S. is an example of a school that has these programs.  Recently they won 1st place in our District Business Plan Competition and have started a Summer and Fall program for writing business plans.  The kids in your area can benefit as well if your club takes the initiative to contact local schools to get classes scheduled.

For information on how to get started, contact C. Ray Carlson, Chair, District Vocational Service

KICK OFF THE YEAR WITH PUBLIC RELATIONS OPPORTUNITIES

July is full of opportunities for public relations for your club. Take advantage of this simple template to introduce your new president to the community. It's a basic fill-in-the-blank template that will get you past that scary blank piece of paper! Send me a link if you get a story published!

ALTADENA'S SIGNATURE ACTIVITY PROMOTES ROTARY

Altadena Calif. Rotary's signature activity for 20 years is Youth Entrepreneurship Education both locally and abroad, which involves teaching basic business principles and how to write business plans that can lead to small business start-ups and the creation of JOBS, of which there are very few these days. Business-savvy Rotarians can as Vocational Service easily teach New Generations youth or train teachers, using the many available curricula. Business-plan competitions excite the kids and motivate them to study harder and remain in school. Previous programs include:  Armenia, Lebanon, Nazareth/Jerusalem, Uganda (with World Bank), Zimbabwe, Zambia (with US Dept of State), Nigeria, Mexico, Poland, Native Americans.

District 5300 Rotarians can join a Vocational Training Team to New Generation youth in the Philippines, under the leadership of Ren Fruto, who is looking for clubs to participate in a $25,000 Matching Grant for this project.
