The Verners -
Missions Training Update
Greetings!
Ever been so excited to share about an experience you had, but you had no idea where to start or how to express what you felt? Well, that's exactly how we feel about our missions training last month. It was totally amazing from start to finish, but expressing it so that you can get a glimpse of what we experienced has proved to be somewhat of a challenge. However, we're going to give it our best shot!
Admittedly, it was a little bit of information overload. It is totally impossible to cram in everything that a missionary appointee needs to know into one week of training, but the TEAM staff came pretty close! Our sessions included topics such as "What is the Church?", which opened up a great dialog about how we, as Americans, view the church and how differently other cultures see it.
Another subject was church planting, which is what we will ultimately be doing in our ministry to Italians. TEAM's purpose is to "help churches send missionaries to establish reproducing churches among the nations to the glory of God" and they spent a lot of time on what it takes to plant healthy, growing, and ultimately, reproducing churches that can change the spiritual climate of a nation and the world.
Of course, there was much instruction about support raising and how best to go about that, as well as the Biblical basis behind it. We also learned a ton about TEAM as an organization and are sure, now more than ever, that this is the organization that God would have us partner with in our call to reach Italy with the gospel.
But it wasn't just us who got all the training! Bryson and Laynie attended their own program with 5 other elementary-age kids. They learned all about Italian culture and even were able to meet a retired missionary couple from Italy who came to share about their experiences. Not only that, but they also met kids going to Taiwan, Austria, Chad, India, and Ireland and got to learn about some of those countries, too!
While the training was great for the whole family, some of the best time was spent over lunch or dinner with other missionaries who are called to various parts of the world; hearing their struggles and their triumphs, their stories and their advice. Some of the missionaries we met have been with TEAM for decades and some are brand new, just like us, but it was soul-refreshing to meet so many people who have the same passion and call to reach a lost world for Christ. We all made friends during that week that will last a lifetime and even got to know another family, the Johnsons (see picture at top), who are also headed to Italy! Thank you for your prayers and support to help get us there! It was an investment that will reap kingdom dividends for years to come! |

Vision Trip
So you may be wondering, "What's the next step?" During a time of prayer and fasting in January, the Lord confirmed to us the need to take a vision trip to Italy. Since neither of us have ever been to Italy, we feel that this is a critical part of the preparation process and will be very important as we move forward in our calling.
The purpose of this trip is to visit all of the cities where TEAM Italy is currently working, as well as a few where future church plants are planned. This will give us a broad overview of all the ministry initiatives and will help us have a better idea of the specific area or ministry that God is calling us to in Italy. We will also be meeting with almost all of the TEAM missionaries who are currently working with Italians and we will being staying with many of them as we travel between the 11 cities we're scheduled to visit.
One of the places we're particularly excited to see is Perugia, which is where we will be living upon arrival in Italy and where we will attend language school at the University for Foreigners. We hope to check out the university, as well as schools for the kids, and get a general sense of what it will be like to live there. More importantly, though, is the opportunity to get a real feel for the spiritual state of Italians and what it will take to reach them with the gospel. We learned recently that Europe is the only continent in the world where Christianity is on the decline. It is our responsibility as Christians to do something about it! We are willing to go, but we need your help.
Since most of our accommodations and meals will be covered by staying with missionaries, the bulk of our expense for this trip will be airfare to Italy and train fare within the country. The estimated cost is $2,500 and the Lord has already provided $925 of the amount needed. However, we still need $1,575 to make this trip possible. Our trip is scheduled for April 2-11, which is right around the corner and we need to purchase airfare soon! If God is leading you to give, you can donate online! Just select "Verner, Stephen and Brandy" from the drop-down box under "Give to Support a Missionary". Or, you can mail a check! Please make the check payable to "TEAM" and write "Stephen and Brandy Verner" on the memo line. Then, just drop it in the mail to us at:
The Verners 4867 Ashford Dunwoody Rd, Apt. 8104
Dunwoody, GA 30338
All contributions are tax-deductible and will go a long way to helping us fulfill the calling that God has given our family to reach Italy for Christ. Your prayers and support mean so much to us and we know that we can't do this without you! If you have questions about anything, please feel free to email us at Stephen@theverners.org or Brandy@theverners.org. You can also check out our website at www.theverners.org for more information.
With love,
Stephen, Brandy, Bryson, & Laynie | |
