Past Project/Success Story:

École secondaire Bernard-Gariépy, Quebec

29 students from École secondaire Bernard-Gariépy improved their knowledge of water quality by measuring various water data, such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and fecal coliforms. They then conducted a survey with 136 members of the local community to raise awareness about water. The survey results were shared in three local papers and by a local radio station.

Roundtables DeloitteReady or not? Preparing youth for 21st century responsible citizenship

Deloitte and Learning for a Sustainable Future hosted four roundtables this past spring on educating youth for responsible citizenship.

The calls to action that came out of the roundtables were:

  • Make responsible citizenship education a priority: establish it as a graduation outcome
  • Learning through experience: embed leadership and volunteerism into the curriculum with service learning
  • Grounding education in real word issues: embed learning within the local community
  • Empowering youth as change agents: provide positive role models to encourage and support engagement
  • Supporting teachers: equip teachers to teach democratically and engage their students in civic participation

The final report, "Ready or not? Preparing youth for 21st century responsible citizenship" is available on the LSF website.

Next Steps

LSF is hosting a What's Worth Knowing in Education for Responsible Citizenship Symposium in the spring of 2013. We will also be launching a competition to write a "Code of Responsibilities and Duties" for Canadian youth that parallels the Charter of Rights and Freedoms later this fall.

GTLSF encourages teachers and students to apply to the Aviva Community Fund!
Starting September 24th, submit your idea for community change

AvivaLearning for a Sustainable Future is excited to once again partner with Aviva Insurance for the launch of the 2012 Aviva Community Fund. LSF's Resources for Rethinking (R4R.ca) database provides great ideas for school action projects that you can
use to create your submission with your class.

The Aviva Community Fund is Canada's longest running online community competition. With over $2.5 million dollars given away to date, the Aviva Community Fund is making a difference in communities across the country. Submit your idea for positive change and have a chance at sharing in this year's $1 million Aviva Community Fund. The top ideas are chosen by Canadians.
