Greetings!
Spring is in the air! The birds are chirping. The tulips are tossing their delicate heads! What a great time to get outdoors.
2011 was an exciting year for LSF, culminating with our 20th Anniversary Gala on November 15, 2011 with over 80 guests attending. We were excited to launch the first LSF Jack Layton Award for Youth Action in Sustainability. The following day, LSF hosted the What's Worth Knowing: Health and the Environment Symposium in Toronto. This exciting event brought together 120 key policy makers to discuss the role of formal education in mitigating health care costs. Thank you to BMO Financial Group for hosting the 20th Anniversary Gala and the What's Worth Knowing: Health and the Environment Symposium.
Get involved in opportunities LSF has to offer this spring including Professional Development, action project funding, new tools and resources, awards and surveys...
Enjoy,
Pamela Schwartzberg

Winners of the LSF Jack Layton Award for Youth Action in Sustainability
In 2011, to honour Jack Layton's passion for optimism and hope, LSF established the LSF Jack Layton Award for Youth Action in Sustainability. On Tuesday, November 15, 2011, the 2011 award was presented at LSF's 20th Anniversary Gala to Ms. Crawford's grade 3 class, from Edenbrook Hill Public School in Brampton, Ontario. Layton's son, Toronto Councillor Mike Layton, was on hand to present the award. The grade 3 students built vermicomposters and organized a vermicomposting program to educate the entire school about composting options. They also made a school yard greening plan and distributed the compost amongst their newly planted trees. Visit the LSF Jack Layton Award page for details on how to apply for the 2012 LSF Jack Layton Award. Deadline for submissions is May 31, 2012. Visit our YouTube page to watch a video of the Edenbrook Hill students in action! |

Ready or not? Preparing youth for 21st century responsible citizenship
Deloitte and Learning for a Sustainable Future will be hosting a national roundtable series this spring on educating youth for responsible citizenship. The roundtables will bring together perspectives from government, school boards, community organizations, business, educators and researchers alike. The input and recommendations gathered will be used to create a white paper addressing the development of 21st century responsible citizens. To help us prepare for the roundtables, LSF is conducting a Responsible Citizenship Survey. Students are encouraged to answer the survey, which will inform the roundtables. |

Banning the Bottle at St. George's School
At St. George's School of Montreal, the Green Team raised awareness regarding plastic water bottles and their environmental impact. By selling reusable bottles, they were also able to contribute in the purchase of water fountains. Currently, no plastic water bottles are sold in school vending machines or at their events.
Restoring our Waterways
Aboriginal students from Northwestern Ontario participated in Project FLOW activities through the Matawa Learning Centre in Thunder Bay, Ontario. They travelled to the shoreline of Lake Superior and carried out a clean-up to prevent waste from affecting water supplies within their communities.
