Greetings!

The holiday season is upon us and here at the Carhart Center, we have many things to celebrate. One of those things is the 1 year anniversary of Connect.wilderness.net.

Connect.wilderness.net: 1 Year
This month marks the one year anniversary of Connect.wilderness.net, the only social network for wilderness professionals. Since its creation, the network has gained 680+ members, with more joining every day. The chart below demonstrates the variety of audiences using Connect today:

Connect currently boasts 33 member-created groups, photo sharing capibilities, wilderness related job listings, training/conference listings, and personal profiles highlighting each member's unique set of skills and experiences. However, the most important feature of Connect is its ability to bring individuals together in order to help solve complex problems. Here are two stories from current users about how Connect has helped them professionally:

Brian R. Bourne
"I've gotten some good advice on rigging for backcountry projects. There are some very smart folks on Connect and it's great to converse with people you might not otherwise know at all. There's truly a wealth of knowledge out there and being able to tap into that is wonderful and furthers the mission that we have in wilderness management. One specific example of a "lesson learned" recently from a colleague: David Michael related a rigging principle in an example that has allowed me to teach others the principle in a real-world, easy to understand method that I had never even considered. This small piece of advice has had a large impact on my trail crew's ability to understand the concepts of the force necessary to lift an object with a highline system. Thanks to David!"

"Throughout my Forest Service career I always hoped for more communication between all levels of wilderness employees, mostly because there were simply not very many good ways for us to communicate. One way - and sometimes the only way - for someone to talk to a person from another unit was to attend the annual regional wilderness rendezvous, but that usually happened only once a year, and with decreasing annual budgets, it became difficult for many employees and partners to attend those events. Considering that valuable information and experiences are exchanged through the rendezvous' and the few other ways employees find to communicate with each other, it seemed a shame to me that very few ways existed for employees and partners to talk. Talking with others who are interested in what we're all doing for wilderness is important! I think this communication tool we have now in Connect.wilderness.net will grow and prove its worth even more in the years to come - it is a good way for people to share - no, it's a great way for people to share and learn!"

Thanks to all of you who have made Connect the success that it is. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year.
Sincerely,

Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center Staff
