I'm excited to share some of the interviews Jane Kaczmarek and I did for DePuy's educational campaign using the LTMYS brand! She made it so fun and easy.

Peer Groups |
I'll be leading two mastermind-style groups starting in September. These highly structured monthly meetings are designed to rapidly advance member's goals by activating the strengths of the group's collective wisdom. The first group is a What I Know Now Peer Mentor Circle, which will build leaders within a Pennsylvania corporation. The second group, called The Pinnacle Club, is for female business owners who will dramatically grow the number of their ideal customers. To learn more contact us.

Letters To My Younger Self with Ellyn Spragins Discovering your inner wisdom and sharing it with others
Hello Everyone!
Don't you love being taken out of your every-dayness? Routines are great but if I'm overly devoted to one, I sink into a rut in no time. So, I was especially grateful for two paradigm-shifters during this long, cool, beautiful spring.
First, a great girl's getaway encompassing food, gardens and art. If you get the chance, eat at Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, NY.
| Amuse-bouche at Blue Hill |
The restaurant's kitchen alchemists made an overwintered turnip, cooked all day under a brick, taste like a rare kind of carmelized meat.
We followed Blue Hill with a visit to the blooming alpine flowers of Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring and Storm King Art Center, where I finally saw Maya Lin's Wave Field. (She's the designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.)
The second routine-buster landed right at home: not one, but two birds' nests built amidst the hydrangea climbing the exterior wall of our bedroom. One nest already contains quivering balls of downy feathers. When they decide to show their faces I'll know how many babies there are.

LTMYS Brand Supports Corporate Goals
This year is bringing some stimulating new opportunities for the Letters To My Younger Self concept and brand, which I'm thrilled about.
First, DePuy Orthopaedics, manufacturer of knee and hip replacements to treat pain and immobility caused by osteoarthritis, has just launched an educational campaign featuring letters to younger selves by six men and women who have had joint replacement. The idea is brilliant: if you have osteoarthritis and are thinking about joint replacement, wouldn't you want to understand what folks who have gone through it wished they'd known? Here's what they had to say.
Harnessing the LTMYS brand this way and working with the six letter-writers appealed to me for a number of reasons (which you can read about here), not least because I was able to reconnect with Jane Kaczmarek, the delightful actress (Malcolm in the Middle) whose letter was in my first book. She's had both hips replaced, a choice that symbolized a larger shift needed in her life. "You are not this all-resourceful, all-powerful person who can thrive while disregarding your physical and emotional needs. You have to take care of you first," she advises her younger self. Read the rest of her powerful letter here.
Second: A customized Letters To My Younger Self book is in the works.

Susan DiClemente
|
Here's to creative thinkers! A while back Susan DiClemente, Director of Communications at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Inc., in Cambridge, MA, read What I Know Now and contacted me about speaking to NIBR's women's interest group.
After the speech, Susan kept thinking about how she'd like to achieve the twin effects of the letters for her company. First, she wanted to celebrate accomplished, but sometimes overlooked, female scientists. She also hoped to find a way to empower and inspire the women at NIBR, and possibly elsewhere, by illuminating the struggles that successful female scientists have faced and overcome.
So, a customized Letters To My Younger Self series is being born! I'm currently interviewing and working with five Novartis scientists on their letters. This year the series will live online and consist of five letters. Eventually, Susan and the Cambridge Women's Resource Group aims to expand the number of letters and possibly create a hard copy version.

It's Back!
Canyon Ranch Retreat
October 14 - 17 2012
I'm feeling peaceful already--getting the chance once again to lead a Letters To My Younger Self Retreat at Canyon Ranch (Lenox, MA) in a glorious New England fall setting.
Can you make time for yourself...and time for reflection about where you are today and how you got there?
And let's not forget to ask if you will make time for yoga, hot stone massages, biking, facials, medical and nutritional consultations...whew, the list of what to do there is too long! I didn't have time for a hike last year, so that's tops on my list for this year.
I hope I'll see you, and maybe a good friend of yours, there!
(For more information write to me...or to book this fabulous retreat, please call The Spa Connection at 888-580-8388)

An Amazing Day at Enterprise Holdings
Not too long ago, Michelle Bosch, who runs Enterprise Holdings' Greater Washington DC region, was chatting with Kris Stuber, VP of Human Resources, about books they were reading. After picking up What I Know Now About Success, Michelle sent me an email and before long we were talking about a LTMYS Seminar for a special Women's Leadership Initiative event.
Because of Michelle, and her fellow women leaders, her region's female leadership program is exceptionally strong and reflects her enthusiastic spirit. This year she decided to invite an even broader group of women--and a few well-chosen men. The room buzzed with excitement as everyone reconnected and prepared to hear the letters I co-created with three of Enterprise's stars.
Here are the key themes and messages that emerged:
Heather Andreana, Group Rental Manager, Central PA, wrote to herself at 34: "Hang on to your confidence by being willing to ask for help and advice."
Lisa Burgess, Vice President for Business Development, wrote to herself at 29: "If you let this guy run you out of the company and away from all you've worked for, then that guy has won and you've lost."
Michelle Bosch, Vice President and General Manager of Enterprise's Greater Washington DC operations, wrote to herself at 19: "You will not be powerless. You will not be without choices."
The inflection points in their lives that shaped their letters led us into a fascinating onstage discussion of managing up, what to do when you feel you're failing and women developing self-sufficiency in their careers and personal lives. Hats off to my powerful panelists and the women in the room who responded with such warm-hearted, vivacious commentary! _____________________________________________________________
Wishing you great getaways this summer!
