Letters To My Younger Self with Ellyn Spragins
Discovering your inner wisdom and sharing it with others

Ellyn and Tara at Massage Envy

Here I am with Tara Gilvar, Founder of B.I.G.

Hello LTMYS Friends and Fans,

As you can tell, I'm in the mood for massage and hope you are too. In October I'll be conducting two very different retreats in Cape May, NJ and Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA. There'll
be massages aplenty, along with wonderful programs. (Check it out below.)

If you'd like to meet makeup maven Trish McEvoy, women's marketing guru Mary Lou Quinlan, and ad agency chief Linda Kaplan Thaler, I hope you'll join me on March 8th in NYC at a New York Women in Communications event. Anyone can come!

You won't want to miss Trish, Mary Lou and Linda, whose letters were in my most recent book, because A.) They are spectacular human beings and B.) Their letters will make you feel like you can take over the world. Register here.

Amidst the snow and ice storms, dramatic upheaval in the Middle East and a still-wobbly economy, I'm taking heart from The Rational Optimist, by Matt Ridley.
Its fundamental message is that everything in the Rational Optimist book jacketworld is getting better, and will continue to do so. His theory rests on reams of facts and observations, but particularly upon this potent thought: "...at some point in human history, ideas began to meet and mate, to have sex with each other." He goes on to explain that just as sex brings together genes for biological evolution, human culture creates ever-greater prosperity because ideas are being exchanged more broadly and faster than ever before.

His rare and sunny outlook: "..along the way there is no reason we cannot solve the problems that beset us, of economic crashes, population explosions, climate change and terrorism...it is perfectly possible, indeed probable, that in the year 2110, a century after this book is published, humanity will be much, much better off than it is today and so will the ecology of the planet it inhabits."

Ever since I heard Barbara Annis, of Barbara Annis & Associates, speak about the differences between how men and women work and communicate, two of her observations have stuck in my head.

Based on surveys of thousands of executives, she told our audience that women's definition of success is "accomplishing something while feeling valued by others." Men's definition? "Winning."

Another example of shockingly different gender communication: To women, the phrase "What do you think?" means "Let's open up the discussion." But to men, the phrase signifies that the conversation is over.

Small as these examples are, to me they underscore once again that women must be careful not to accept traditional definitions of success in finding their way to the top. Most likely those definitions won't be meaningful. If you're female it will take extra work and reflection to form an internal picture of effective leadership that chimes with what is most significant to you.

And now, about those massages, facials and other necessary forms of self-nurturing:

A Retreat for Executive Women with Special Needs Kids

Cape May, NJ
October 12th - 15th

In partnership with Nebo Company's thoughtful and effective founder, Kate Ebner, and her charming colleague, Susan Dunlap, this retreat is for executive moms of special needs kids.

In leafy Cape May, a beach town studded with picturesque Victorian houses and B & B's, you'll have time to lay down work and family burdens. Your retreat with other moms like yourself will combine restorative walks, bike rides and other activities with an in-depth program designed to help you stay strong and centered in the key roles you play. Contact info@letterstomyyoungerself.com if you may be interested in this unique program.
