Everything you ever wanted to know about how to study abroad!!!
Article by: Carrie Abbott, Associate Director of SU Abroad

The Office of First Year and Transfer Programs sat down with Carrie Grogan Abbott, associate director for SU Abroad, to learn more about opportunities for transfer students to study abroad.

FYTP:  Is it difficult for transfer students to study abroad?
SU Abroad: Not at all! SU Abroad offers a wide variety of options including semester study, summer programs and even short term programs (1-2 weeks), giving most students the opportunity to incorporate study abroad into their college experience.

FYTP
: Where can students study abroad?
SU Abroad: Really, anywhere in the world!  SU operates eight centers abroad which include Beijing, China; Florence, Italy; Hong Kong; Istanbul, Turkey (NEW!); London, England; Madrid, Spain; Santiago, Chile; and Strasbourg, France.  If you prefer to be more adventurous and enroll in a foreign university through SU, you may be interested in our World Partner programs.  These programs are available across the globe, from Australia to the West Indies and everywhere in between!  Summer programs are also offered around the world and are fantastic 6-8 week opportunities to take classes at some of our centers and/or participate in programs specific to certain academic disciplines.  Lastly, short-term programs are one-two week opportunities in places like London and Costa Rica.

FYTP: With all of these choices, how should a student select where to study abroad?
SU Abroad: Students should consider their academic plan and personal goals when selecting when and where to study abroad.  If it is important to stay on track with courses in your major or minor, you should consider our locations where those courses are offered.
SU Abroad works closely with SU's schools and colleges to offer courses in a wide variety of majors, making it easier for students to incorporate required classes into their study abroad experience.  If you have room for electives and want to study a certain language or explore your heritage, you may have more choices.  Students should consult with their advisor to map out the best location and time for them to study abroad.

FYTP:  How do students apply?
SU Abroad: Applications, as well as a wealth of information on each program and details about financial aid, can be found online at suabroad.syr.edu.  Deadlines are as follows: Spring 2011 - October 11, Summer 2011 - March 1, and Fall 2011 - March 15.

Want to learn more?  Join us for a transfer student-specific information session, Friday, October 1 from 1-2 p.m. in Hall of Languages 105

Syracuse University Career Services offers transfer students the opportunity to explore career interests, find jobs and internships, connect with alumni, and hit the ground running at Syracuse University.  Located in Suite 235 of the Schine Student Center, we serve students and alumni of all years and majors.

Our philosophy is individualized attention.  We will meet with you one-on-one to discuss your particular career needs.  For some, this might involve reviewing a resume or preparing for an interview.  For others, it could be a more lengthy discussion about interests and strengths, to determine potential career options.  To get started using our services, visit our office during 15 Minute Drop-Ins:  Monday/Thursday from 2-4:30pm, Tuesday/Friday 12-2:30pm, and Wednesday 2:30-5:00pm.

In addition, Career Services will host several special events during the month of October.  On October 6, students can meet with more than 100 employers at the Career Fair at the Carrier Dome from 1-5pm.  The Career Fair is an opportunity for students to network with employers and discuss internship and job opportunities. Among the participating industries are retail, technical, government, not-for-profit, consulting, design, hospitality, public affairs/public relations, advertising, biotechnology and a variety of other fields.  For the full list of participating employers, visit: https://syr-csm.symplicity.com/events/students.php?mode=list&cf=fall10

Later in the month, Syracuse University alumni Alana Edmunds and Jayson Garcia will make special appearances to discuss their career paths and share advice with current SU students.  Alana is a Project Manager for General Electric, while Jayson is an International Space Station Training Facilitator for NASA.  Both graduated from Syracuse University in 2008.  The exact dates and times of their campus speeches will be announced soon.

We look forward to connecting with you this fall!

October, the miHalloween Pic - Compressedschevious month of Halloween.

The Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Services brings you tips on how to be safe on Halloween Night!

 HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

1. Think twice before using simulated knives, guns or swords, If such props are used, be certain that they do not appear authentic and are soft and flexible to prevent injury.

2. Candle lit jack-o-lanterns are a fire hazard and should be kept clear of doorsteps and landings. Consider using battery powered lanterns and chemical lightsticks in place of candles in decorations and costumes, and never put jack-o lanterns on your roof!

3. Don't have flammable materials easily accessible.

4. When walking around, stick to sidewalks and crosswalks. Do not take shortcut through back yards, alleys or parks.

5.  Carry a flashlight and travel in groups.

6.  Excercise extreme caution while driving. There are more pedistrians out at Halloween and excited revelers may dart out onto the street, or have their vision obscured by costumes.  Drive slowly and be extra careful when backing out of driveways.

7.  For everyone's safety, leave your porch light on to shed more light on the sidewalk.

8.  If you are going to provide candy to Trick-or-Treaters it should be individually wrapped packaging.

Thinking of moving off campus?

The Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Services' Director Darya Rotblat helps you begin the process

                      Off-Campus Housing 101

It is that time of year: time to begin looking for off-campus housing for the 2011-12 academic year.  The rental season begins very early in Syracuse, but that does not mean that you have to sign a lease right now; you should not rush to sign a lease and should learn about off-campus housing prior to making the decision to move off-campus.  A lease should not be signed until the property has been researched, roommates are confirmed, and the lease has been reviewed by Student Legal Services.

There are a number of rental units available in the University area and one of the best sources for advice and information about off-campus housing are friends and classmates.  Another good place to search is Orange Housing. Orange Housing maintains a web site of apartment offerings in the neighborhoods adjacent to campus. The Orange Housing website is www.orangehousing.com. It is important to keep in mind that this local company is not affiliated with Syracuse University or SUNY ESF and there are absolutely no guarantees about the quality and reliability of the information posted on the website.  Orange Housing also offers roommate searches, sublet listings, and information relevant to apartment hunters.  Apartment listings can also be found in the Daily Orange and at www.apartmentfinder.com.

Your first step in your apartment search is determining your needs. Important considerations include:
·         Distance from campus
·         How much you can afford for rent and utilities
·         On or off-street parking
·         Number of roommates
·         Furnished or non-furnished apartment
·         Length of lease
·         Pets
Once you have determined your needs you will want to view two or more rentals that meet your criteria.  Check out each apartment thoroughly; don't be afraid to test faucets, doorknobs, etc. and make sure you are satisfied with the safety features available (window locks, security lights, etc.).  You should talk with the current tenants about the apartment; ask about location and experiences with the landlord.  Once you decide on an apartment and have done all needed research, you should have the lease reviewed by Student Legal Services.

The Office of Off-Campus and Commuter Services (OCCS) is a resource that you should also utilize in your search for off campus housing.  OCCS staff will assist you in your search by educating you on what is needed to have a successful off-campus living experience.  OCCS is available for in person assistance at 754 Ostrom Avenue, via phone at 315-443-5489, online at offcampus.syr.edu, via email at offcampus@syr.edu.

Transfer Student Spotlight: Alexander Wronkowski talks about his study abroad experience in London, England

One of the best programs available at Syracuse University is SU Abroad.  I spent the spring semester of this year in London, and had the time of my life.  It is something everyone in college should experience.  I was able to experience the culture differences in another country while still taking my normal SU classes.  This was possible because SU Abroad has a satellite campus in the center of London.

As a Whitman School of Management student, I was able to take all the classes I would have taken had I still been in Syracuse, which is something most people don't realize.  Being a transfer student, I had to make sure that I would still be on track to graduate if I studied abroad, and this was definitely the case.

Also, while in London, the SU Abroad internship coordinator helped find me an internship at a major finaAlex_Study Abroadncial institution.  Every SU London student who wanted an internship was able to get one easily.  The SU Abroad program is so good that I met several other students whose schools use SU Abroad's program instead of their own to study abroad in London.

Prior to the semester, I did a "prequel course" in Ireland.  This involved spending ten days in Dublin and Belfast learning about the culture and history as well as exploring the magnificent landscape of Ireland. It was educational, but also a lot of fun as we toured places like the Guinness Factory and watched Irish singers and dancers.  The group was only about twenty people, but many of them became some of my best friends at SU, and I already had a great group of friends when I entered London immediately after.  SU Abroad also offers a prequel course in Scotland.

London is an amazing city.  There was so much to see, and I felt that even in an entire semester there, I still only saw a small amount of what the city has to offer.  On weekends it was incredibly easy to travel to other European countries.  During the semester, I spent weekends in Scotland, France, and the Netherlands. Spring break was spent in Greece which was amazing!  After the semester, I took trains around central Europe and visited Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.  Taking trains around and living in hostels was a very cheap way to travel when you are on a student budget. A year ago I had never been outside the United States, now I've been to 12 countries and made lifelong friends and memories.  SU Abroad also has campuses in Beijing, Florence, Madrid, Istanbul and several other locations around the world, so take advantage!

To start the process of applying, talk to your advisor about which abroad programs have the classes you need to take. Then stop by the SU Abroad Office which is located at 106 Walnut Place. Studying abroad was one of the best decisions that I have ever made.  I made memories in London that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.  So go talk to your advisor now, before time runs out!  The deadline to apply to SU Abroad for the spring is October 11.  You'll be glad that you did!!!
