WPHS Boy's & Girl's Cross Country Win Ozark Conference Titles!
Congratulations to the West Plains 2010 Ozark Conference Boys' Cross Country Champs and the 2010 Ozark Conference Girls' Cross Country Champs. Both teams won Ozark Conference Titles Saturday at Lake Springfield.
The Zizzer Boys' team scored 26 points, Kickapoo 76, Lebanon 89, and Glendale 115. (9 teams competed).
Zizzer JV Boys won 1st place with a score of 17 followed by Kickapoo with 38.
The Zizzer girls scored 34, Rolla 77, Waynesville 100 and Kickapoo 109. (8 teams competed)

Join the WPHS FCCLA Scavenger Hunt

The WPHS FCCLA will be hosting a scavenger hunt on Saturday, October 16th at 7:00pm. The entry fee is $5.00 a person with a maximum of five people per team.
All team members need to be present at sign-up and the starting point is at the WPHS parking lot.
The challenge is a 100 item list with two hours to complete. Items cannot be purchased and each team will need a digital camera.
A prize package will be awarded to the winning team and chili and snacks will be served after.

WPHS Renaissance Academic Reception Date Set
The West Plains High School Annual Academic Recognition Reception will be held on Sunday, October 24th at 2 p.m. in the High School cafeteria. Students who earned a 3.64 or above grade point average during the 2009-2010 school year will be awarded letters, bars, and pins for their achievement. Refreshments will follow the awards program. |

WPHS Chess Club News
The WPHS Chess Club will meet on Tuesday mornings in Mrs. Cobb's room 239.
Congratulations to Arthur Walter, the new WPHS Chess Club President!
October 23rd Gainesville Invitational Tournament. Bus will leave school @ 7am and return around 5pm. Cost: $5
October 26th Howell County Chess Championship. Fairview School 4pm-8pm. Cost: $3

Community First Banking Company donates to the WPHS Renaissance Program
Community First Banking Company donated $2,000 to the Renaissance Program at the West Plains High School. It is a program that rewards students for their academic achievement. Students who qualify may earn one-half to one day of independent study from school, free admittance to school activities, and are invited to an Annual Academic Reception held each fall.

Missouri Judges to Speak about Constitution in West Plains
Judge Zel M. Fischer of the Supreme Court of Missouri, Judge Glenn Norton of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Howell County associate circuit judges Don Henry and Truman Wiles, and Judge David Evans, presiding judge of the 37th Judicial Circuit (Carter, Howell, Oregon and Shannon counties), are expected to speak at an open public forum scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., Friday, Oct. 15 at West Plains R-VII Middle School's FEMA Center in West Plains.
Judge Fischer is expected to present topics and cases dealing with the First and Second amendments of the United States Constitution and developments in state constitutional law. Judge Norton will present topics regarding the Fourth and Fifth amendments of the United States Constitution - specifically, how those amendments protect our freedoms and their applicability to our daily lives. Judges Henry and Wiles will co-present a discussion about how the constitution applies in trial courts, primarily through the issuance of search and arrest warrants.
The media and public are invited to attend.

| BASE October Events
BASE will host a booster seat give away (for BASE enrolled students) or check if existing seats are properly installed by Howell County Health Department, while the children (K - 1st) will be educated by MDOT buckle buddies program on October 20. Hours 3:00 - 5:00 PM at West Plains Elementary
Lights on after School, a nationwide awareness of after school programs, will be celebrated on October 21 at West Plains Elementary, South Fork Elementary and West Plains Middle School during BASE hours (2 hours immediately following the end of the regular school day). Each school is encouraging parents to attend. The programs will feature various presentations at each school so parents can see what their children are doing during program hours. |

Special Services Transition Fair To Be Held at West Plains R-VII
This year, West Plains Special Services is sponsoring a Transition Fair in the WPHS Cafeteria. The Fair will be held on October 21, 2010 (Thursday) from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on October 22, 2010 (Friday). This Transition Fair will replace the traditional parent/teacher conferences that are held during this time.
At the Transition Fair each day, the following topics will be provided. The Transition Fair will help students and families transition into the world of work or post-secondary education after graduation. There are many topics available. The following subjects will be available at the Transition Fair to answer questions in regards to specific topics.

- Guardianship
- Estate Planning
- Applying for benefits (Social Security, Food Stamps, Medicaid, etc.)
- Social/Recreational Opportunities
- Day Programming
- Employment
- Individual Service Plans
- College Opportunities
- Career Development

West Plains Elementary School Students Share Their Artwork With the World!
Move Over Famous Artists! West Plains Elementary School artists are taking over the spotlight! Kathy Grigsby and Deanna Watkins, the school's Art Teachers, has teamed up with Artsonia, www.artsonia.com -- the world's largest online kid's art museum -- to display the students' artwork.
Anyone can view the school gallery online at: www.artsonia.com/schools/WestPlains1. Visitors can browse the artwork in the school gallery by grade level, or by specific exhibits. West Plains Elementary School students join thousands of students from over 100 countries whose artwork is showcased on Artsonia. This program is a wonderful way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Education. |

Zizzer Pride Necklaces and Key Chains On Sale
The WPHS Band announces that they are selling Zizzer necklaces and key chains. The tags are engraved and come with either a ribbon necklace or key chain. The Zizzer emblem comes either plain or with the Homecoming theme engraved on the back on a ribbon.
The key chains have the 2010 Homecoming theme, Zizzer emblem with a tradition since 1908, and Be a Zizzer...Pursue Excellence!
The cost is $5 and all proceeds go towards the Zizzer Pride Band Program.
