OMC, R-VII Recognized for Student Transition Program
SWAT assists special needs students with social, job skills
A collaborative program between West Plains R-VII School District and Ozarks Medical Center (OMC) that assists students with successful integration into the world of work and society has been named a model of success by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
The SWAT (Students Working at Transition) program is designed to provide on-the-job training for R-VII student with special needs. According to SWAT Teacher Joe Davis, students receive opportunities at OMC to job shadow employees, which increases their jobs skills, encourages them to accept responsibility and assists them with future vocational options. By naming the SWAT program a Model of Success in Transition, DESE recognized OMC for its outstanding vision, dedication and commitment to excellence in this transition program.
"When students are involved in the SWAT Program it allows for an easy transition into the world of work because of their exposure to a wide variety of job shadowing experiences and the increase in their level of maturity ," Davis said. "One reason for this increase in maturity is because students are not taught in typical classrooms and are exposed to working professionals on a regular basis. The SWAT Program is designed to afford opportunities to learn traditional jobs in nontraditional educational settings."
Al Gibbs, Director of Support Services at OMC, said the medical center is pleased to provide opportunities through the SWAT program.
"This is program is a great partnership between the school and OMC and the benefits it provides to students are outstanding," Gibbs said. "It is wonderful to see the growth and learning that takes place through this program. It is also a joy to see the positive influence this group of young people have on the OMC staff, patients and visitors."
The SWAT program began in 2006.
