Agencies Join Forces to Promote Rail Safety
in Howell County

Several agencies are teaming up this month to conduct a weeklong safety blitz in and around the cities of West Plains and Willow Springs to combat a sudden rise in rail-related incidents in Howell County.  Within the first five months of the year, railroad trespassing incidents claimed the lives of two pedestrians and two individuals were injured in three separate rail-highway crossing crashes in the county.

Each year Missouri Operation Lifesaver targets rail safety education campaigns to the state's top 10 counties where the highest occurrences of crashes and trespass incidents have occurred during the past four years. At the beginning of the year, Howell County wasn't on that top-10 list.  Between the years of 2006 and 2009, there were only three rail-related incidents in Howell County resulting in two fatalities and one injury. However, due to a sudden upsweep in tragic rail-related incidents so far this year, the county is now Missouri Operation Lifesaver's number one target for safety education.

Local and state law enforcement agencies, state transportation officials, BNSF Railway personnel and other volunteers will conduct more than 170 safety presentations from Sept. 14-16 to all school children and school bus drivers in both the West Plains and Willow Springs school districts.

"West Plains, Willow Springs and several other local school districts are working with Missouri Operation Lifesaver in trying to reduce this alarming accident trend by allowing rail safety education programs to be presented in their schools to both drivers and pedestrians," said Rick Mooney, Missouri Operation Lifesaver state coordinator.  "We want students, school district staff and the community at large to make safe decisions at rail crossings and around railroad tracks."

In addition, local law enforcement officers and other first responders will receive training on responding to rail-related incidents.  Other enforcement programs will also be scheduled during the week to emphasize the importance of safety.  Personnel from three police agencies will also be working with the railroads and other officials in conducting Officer on the Train events in the area.  Officer on the Train is when a police officer is on the engine and reports crossing law violations to ground patrol units.

Celebrate Adult Education and
Family Literacy Week!

-Are You Ready?

September 13th - 19th, 2010

On Monday July 19th, Congress approved a resolution to designate the week of September 13, 2010 as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. This is a one-time only dedication and opportunity to elevate adult education and family literacy nationwide with policymakers, the media, and the community.

The following website may help you organize quickly to celebrate and raise awareness of adult education and literacy issues during AEFL Week. www.ncladvocacy.org/aefl.html

Take a Trip to Puerto Rico!

A trip to Puerto Rico is being organized for July 2011 and the invitation is extended to you! The trip is not a school sponsored trip so anyone (students and adults) may go. The group is hoping to gain insight to Puerto Rican culture and learn the history of the island and its people.  They also plan to explore extraordinary natural features such as rain forest, caves, and coral reefs while traveling to an exotic island that is safe for its visitors.

Make plans to attend the informational meeting on Wednesday, September 15th from 5:30 to 6:00 pm in the high school cafeteria. Topics to be discussed are the itinerary, costs, payment plans etc. Authentic Puerto Rican food will be served while traditional music plays quietly in the background to give you a sense of what is in store!
