Richter & Eggert to Attend MO Scholars Academy | | Kelly Richter daughter of Jurgen and Rhonda Richter and Tyler Eggert, son of Eric and Karen Eggert, students at West Plains High School , have been selected as two of 330 students to attend the 2010 Missouri Scholars Academy, a three-week residential program to be held June 13 - July 13 on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Founded in 1985, the Missouri Scholars Academy(MSA) inaugurates its second quarter century this summer. The goals of the Academy are to help gifted students achieve their full potential and motivate them to use their abilities to attain high standards of achievement, to encourage local schools to improve and expand gifted education programs; and to assist in providing the state with experienced faculty and specialized curriculum for such students. The Academy is supported in part by funds provided by the state, by the University of Missouri, by MSA alumni and friends, by Missouri corporations, and by a Student Activity Fee. Student Selection is under the auspices of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; all other aspects of MSA are the responsibility of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Every public and private high school in the state is allowed to nominate at least one student for the Academy. Academically, students represent the top one-half of one percent of the state's sophomore class. No grades or credits are awarded through the program.
Students attending MSA will be exposed to a wide range of activities as well as to intensive instruction in their chosen area of specialization. The faculty is composed of outstanding teachers from high schools throughout the state. Guest speakers, performers, discussions, and career education will be combined with extracurricular and social activities to round out the curriculum.
By the end of the 2010 Academy, more than 8700 Missouri high school students and teachers will have participated in MSA since its inception. |

Middle School Map Days | | |
The West Plains Middle School recently held MAP Days for students who displayed good behavior during the two week period of MAP testing. Map Days started out with a movie in the gym and the other portion of the day consisted of volleyball, kickball, whiffleball, Frisbee, golf, hydro relays and roasted hot dogs. There was also a dunking booth that teachers volunteered for and the students took their turns in trying to dunk them.
Coach Alicia Gunter said "We want our kids to excel during testing so that we can see their true achievement levels and hoped this would serve as an incentive for them to do their best. I believe the students did their absolute best this year and we are very proud of them". All grades participated in Map Reward Day. Students qualified by their behavior, attitude, effort during testing. |

Ginger Armstrong - Last Year as Volunteer for Red Cross
Ginger Armstrong, a teacher at WPHS, has been running the Red Cross Blood Drive at the High School for over 16 years. Ginger has decided this will be her last year to participate with the WPHS blood drive since she will be relocating soon.
A blood drive was recently held - ran by the Seniors and Mrs. Armstrong. This is the second year the group will receive two scholarships because they have done two blood drives, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Ginger says that it has been a lot of fun, and loves that the fact that all the blood donated from the community stays in the community. |

All Students Entering the 8th Grade Require Tdap Immunization
A Message from Amanda Newton & Debbie King:
Dear Parent/Guardian,
The Missouri Department of Health is requiring all students entering the 8th grade to have a Tdap immunization before the start of the school year.
This is not a new immunization. It was previously due 10 years after the last one, which most students needed around the 9th grade.
You may get the immunization from your doctor or the Howell County Health Department (256-7078). Please call as soon as possible to make your appointment.
After your child receives the immunization, please bring a copy to the nurse's office so it can be documented.
If you have any questions, please call the school at 256-7152.
Thank you,
Amanda Newton & Debbie King |
