Zizzer Band Festival
Band

The WP Band is hosting the first annual Zizzer Band Festival this Saturday at the High School.  We would like to invite you to see our students and those from other schools perform.  We will have fourteen bands performing from 9am - 5pm at the HS Gym. 90 solos or small ensembles performing every 7 mins all day long.

The Zizzer Theatre Presents "The Pavilion"
Pavillion

The spring play is quickly approaching. This year's production is titled "The Pavilion". The show centers around two high school sweethearts at their ten year class reunion. The two must learn to cope with their individual failures, love lost, and ultimately forgiveness. The show contains both comedy and drama, and will prove to be one of West Plains High School's best productions yet. "The Pavilion" will be a memorable experience and will leave you with a stronger awareness of the passing of time and of how out of life's trials, hope and forgiveness can be achieved.

Show times are April 15th-17th at 7:00 PM and the 18th at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $5.00 in advance in the high school upstairs office and $6.00 at the door.

West Plains R-VII Received "Distinction in Performance" Award
Band

Forty-five school districts in south-central Missouri who earned the "Distinction in Performance" award were recently honored by state education officials.  The West Plains R-VII School District was one of the districts receiving the award for 2008-09.  The Distinction in Performance award is one of the state's most prestigious honors for local school districts.  It is based on the district's performance relative to student performance standards that are used to determine state accreditation through the Missouri School Improvement Program.  In order to earn distinction in performance, districts must meet the majority of these performance standards at either a high or significantly improved level.

The awards were presented at the annual "Distinction in Performance" banquet on March 23 at the Havener Center on the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus.  The event was sponsored and hosted by the South Central Regional Professional Development Center, the University, and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  John Lewis, Director of the South Central RPDC, presided at the banquet.  University Chancellor Dr. John F. Carney III and Director of Teacher Education Dr. Jana Neiss provided greetings and congratulations on behalf of the University, and State Board of Education member Sybil Slaughter provided greetings from the State Board and presented the awards to the school districts.  Department of Education Area Supervisors Jay Reese and Tom Nichols assisted with the presentation of the awards.  Lewis noted, "At a time when the number of districts achieving distinction declined slightly statewide, the forty five schools receiving the award was a record number for our region."

"These scores are a testament to the hard work of our students and their teachers.  The district works hard each year to meet the standards the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has set.  We are proud of our faculty, staff and students," said Dr. Fred Czerwonka, West Plains R-VII Superintendent.

  • While open gyms and summer off-season practices are not required, it is very beneficial to attend as much as possible to allow players to practice skills before tryouts in the fall.  While in NO WAY will a player be punished for not attending, keep in mind that those who DO attend will be further along with basic volleyball technique and skill.
  • Please help get the word out of these dates to anyone interested in trying out for high school volleyball for the 2010-2011 school year.

SCCC Practical Nursing Students

SCCC nusingSouth Central Career Center Practical Nursing students recently compiled midwife birthing kits for overseas missions. The students donated and collected the items to be placed in the kits. St. John Mercy Hospital in Springfield assisted the students in locating infant T-shirts for their project. Ms. Linda Collins' FACS class from West Plains High School sewed donated flannel material into receiving blankets. The school has donated one kit to Global Health Ministries for each student in the class over the last five years.

Graduating Foster Teen Shower
Life is difficult after high school, especially for foster teens who do not have support from parents. To that end, members of the WPHS/MSU Associates Program are collecting items for graduating foster teens. Every item donated can help them start a new life after high school. These items will be distributed through Chaffe Foster Care Independence Program. Items needed include: toiletries, cleaning supplies, kitchenware, cookware, beddings, mattresses, irons, ironing boards, furniture, home décor, TV's, and home appliances. Collections will be made through May 21, 2010.  Donations can be dropped off at West Plains High School in room 106 on Wednesdays and Fridays or other arrangements can be made by contacting Adam Chen at 274-2478, Jeremiah George at 293-7976, or Kathleen Aid at 256-6150. Please help these foster teens by donating new or gently used items!
