Love the Bus! |
|
As part of the fourth annual National Love the Bus program this February, parents, students and teachers are celebrating the men and women from the West Plains R-VII School district that take more than 1,200 students safely to school each day.
The Love the Bus program,
founded in 2007 and coordinated by the American School Bus
Council (ASBC), is celebrated on Valentine's Day and throughout February in school districts across the country as a way to raise awareness and appreciation for the hundreds of thousands of school bus drivers who safely transport more than 26 million school children to and from school each day. It is also an opportunity for parents and children to learn more about the safety and environmental benefits of school bus transportation.
"We want to honor the bus drivers that safely take the children in West Plains to school each day," said Robert Pekarek, Transportation Director for West Plains R-VII Schools. "Love the Bus is a great opportunity to thank the people that protect our most precious cargo-our children-and serve as role models on the 480,000 school buses that transport children to and from school each day across the country."
To help celebrate Love the Bus, parents, teachers and children are encouraged to visit the program's Web site,

Wild Night at the Zoo! |
|
|
Students from the West Plains High School Special Services class will be on their way to a night of adventure at the St. Louis Zoo April 15th - 16th. This experience allows a select group of special education teachers and their students to have the entire zoo to themselves, providing an exciting combination of adventure and learning.
A typical schedule for a Wild Night at the Zoo includes a theme driven live animal class, an interpretative game, a video, pizza snack, night hike around the zoo, an overnight stay under the stars or in the Exploration Building Outpost, breakfast, morning hike and a souvenir for each student.
"Some of our special needs students have never been beyond the city limits of West Plains or to a restaurant, or even to a zoo. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity for some of them", says Haley Bray, West Plains High School Special Services teacher.
The total cost of the trip is $2500.00, which pays for the transportation, all meals, snacks, zoo fees and more. The trip is no cost to parents and is fully funded by private donations.
If you would like to help send a child on the zoo adventure you can sponsor a child for just $100.00. Tax-deductible donations will also be appreciated. For more information contact Haley Bray at 256-6150. |
